Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Affresco Arti e Mestieri – actually, it’s split into two spots, Affresco Arti e Mestieri 1 and 2, right there on Via Abramo Massalongo in Verona’s historical center – during a solo trip last spring, when the cherry blossoms were just starting to pop along the Adige River. I’d taken the train into Verona Porta Nuova and decided to walk the 20 minutes or so to stretch my legs, dodging the usual tourist crowds spilling out from Piazza Bra. Honestly, finding the place was a breeze; it’s tucked on this narrow, cobblestone street that’s more residential than you’d expect, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Via Mazzini shopping strip but far enough to dodge the evening noise from those outdoor cafes. The building itself has that classic Veronese charm – think weathered stone facade with these gorgeous fresco details peeking out (the name means “Fresco Arts and Crafts,” after all), and when I buzzed in, the host greeted me like an old friend, handing over keys with a quick rundown of the best nearby gelato spot on Via Cappello. Check-in was super low-key, no fuss with long lines or paperwork – well, maybe because it’s more like a boutique apartment setup than a full hotel, but that 4-star vibe shines through in the thoughtful touches, like fresh linens that smell faintly of lavender and a welcome basket with local biscotti.

What really won me over, though, was how it feels like you’re living in a piece of Verona’s history without sacrificing modern comforts. My room in Affresco 1 had these exposed brick walls and actual fresco remnants – sort of faded but authentic, you know, depicting old artisan scenes that tie into the “mestieri” theme. It wasn’t huge, I mean, space is at a premium in the centro storico, so if you’re packing heavy, you might need to get creative with storage, but the high ceilings and big windows overlooking a quiet courtyard made it feel airy. Mornings were my favorite: I’d brew espresso in the little kitchenette (fully equipped, by the way, with a stovetop and fridge for those market hauls from Piazza delle Erbe, just a five-minute stroll away) and listen to the distant chime of bells from the Duomo. It’s dead central for exploring – you’re basically next door to Juliet’s House if you’re into that romantic kitsch, or you can wander to the Arena for an opera night without breaking a sweat. Parking’s a bit of a headache if you’re driving; the historical center’s mostly pedestrian, so I parked at the Arsenale lot and walked, but the host hooked me up with tips on permits. Oh, and it’s surprisingly quiet at night, except maybe during Carnevale season when the streets get lively – but even then, the double-glazed windows kept things peaceful.

Look, if you’re heading to Verona for that mix of romance and history, this place is a gem – rated 9.4 for good reason, I’d say. It’s not flashy or over-the-top; it’s more like staying in a friend’s stylish pied-à-terre, with personal service that makes you feel in-the-know. Couples would love it for the intimate setup, and honestly, as a solo traveler, I appreciated the security and the way it encouraged me to venture out early for those fresh cornetti from the bakery around the corner on Via Stella. Sure, the Wi-Fi could be spotty during peak hours (blame the thick stone walls), but that’s a minor quibble in a spot this authentic. If you’re planning a trip, book ahead – especially in summer when Verona’s buzzing with festival-goers – and you’ll thank me later. It’s the kind of stay that lingers, like the scent of blooming wisteria on those ancient streets.

I am not sure how to express how much we liked the apartment, the host and the whole atmosphere! Amazing apartment with everything needed in it. Literally in the most central point of the Historical Center of Verona. The host was more than helpful, friendly and the communication with her was easy and pleasant. We will be coming back to Verona for sure, and I wouldn’t like to stay in any other place but this apartment. Highly recommended!

  • Benjamin from United Kingdom – 16 December 2024 (8/10)

Amazing location for exploring Verona. Comfortable and calm interior.

What could be improved: Loud noise inside the flat from other apartments. Notably above who into the early hours sounded like they were moving furniture.

  • Hilda from United Kingdom – 3 October 2024 (10/10)

Charming apartments located in the heart of the city, offering both convenience and comfort. Each apartment is impeccably clean and thoughtfully stocked with all the essentials to make your stay feel like home. Guests will find a variety of complimentary items, including coffee, tea, sweets, and other necessities, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience from the moment they arrive.

What could be improved: The sofa beds need to be replaced, as they are not very comfortable to sleep on.

  • Eleana from Greece – 1 September 2024 (10/10)

The interior, the amenities and the location

  • Polina from United States – 25 August 2024 (8/10)

Fantastic location – minutes from everything but in a quiet street at night. Mattress was comfortable. Really unique wall treatments that make you feel like you’re in a lost time. Host was really responsive and helpful. Apartment was great for a solo traveler. WiFi was fast for working.

What could be improved: Note that there’s no AC in the bedroom (the unit is in the kitchen which is not walled off from the bedroom) so the air can, but doesn’t fully, travel. It wasn’t a problem but for those who sleep cold might not enjoy it.

  • Florence from Portugal – 6 July 2024 (9/10)

Such a lovely apartment, right in the centre, quiet, comfortable, and just perfect for our stay in Verona. I hope to be back at some point!

The wall paintings are amazing too, so special!

What could be improved: The air conditioning was not very strong, and it was very hot when we were there!

  • Joanne from United States – 12 October 2023 (8/10)

The property is located close to all attractions, but nice enough to be removed from the most busiest areas.

  • Simon from United Kingdom – 31 August 2023 (10/10)

A beautiful apartment. The room was spotless, nice and quiet too. Looking forward to staying again. Great location and just a few minutes walk from the river and the centre of town.

What could be improved: Nothing, it was perfect for us
