Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Agriturismo Sommavalle almost by accident last spring, when I was dodging the tourist crowds in Verona’s centro storico – that packed area around the Arena where everyone’s snapping selfies with Juliet’s statue. It’s tucked away on Via Sommavalle, up in the hills just north of the city, maybe a 10-minute drive from the Adige River if you take the back roads past Borgo Trento. Honestly, pulling up that winding lane felt like escaping into another world; the air shifts from urban buzz to this fresh, earthy scent of olive groves and wild herbs – yeah, it’s an actual working farm, or agriturismo as they call it here, so expect to wake up to the faint cluck of chickens or the hum of bees if you’re there in May like I was.

The place itself is this charming stone farmhouse that’s been spruced up without losing its rustic edge – think exposed beams in the rooms, terracotta floors that are cool underfoot even on warmer days, and windows that frame views of rolling vineyards stretching toward Valpolicella (you know, where they make that killer Amarone wine; I grabbed a bottle from a nearby cantina and it paired perfectly with their homemade dinners). My room was on the upper floor, spacious enough for two with a balcony overlooking the valley – nothing fancy, but spotless and cozy, with those thick linen sheets that smell faintly of lavender. Check-in was a breeze; the owners, this friendly local couple, greeted me with a glass of their own prosecco and chatted about the best hiking trails nearby, like the one leading to Forte Sofia ruins, which is just a short walk away and totally underrated. Parking’s no hassle – plenty of spots right outside, which is a godsend in Italy where city lots can be a nightmare. Oh, and if you’re light sleeper, it’s blissfully quiet at night, save for the occasional owl hoot; well, except during harvest season in fall when things might get a tad busier with farm activity, but that’s part of the charm, I suppose. Food-wise, their breakfast spread is a highlight – fresh eggs from the hens, homemade jams from the orchard, and coffee that’s strong enough to kickstart a day trip to Lake Garda, which is only about 30 minutes west if you hop on the A4.

All in all, if you’re the type who wants Verona’s romance without the hassle – like wandering Piazza delle Erbe in the morning then retreating to this peaceful spot for sunset – Sommavalle nails it. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the rooms (better in the common areas, though), and if you don’t have a car, getting there means a taxi from the train station, which adds up. But honestly, for a 4-star spot with that 9.4 rating, it’s a steal – especially if you’re into authentic Italian countryside vibes. I left feeling recharged, and I’d go back in a heartbeat for one of those lazy afternoons by their pool, sipping on local Soave while the hills turn golden. If Verona’s on your itinerary, skip the chain hotels downtown and give this gem a shot; you won’t regret it.

Good breakfast, beautiful ground and great room

Beautiful setting, spacious apartment, great breakfast and nice people

  • Moonyoung from Germany – 28 August 2024 (8/10)

A charming villa set in a peaceful location with stunning gardens. The stay was well-organized, and the care provided was great. We chose a villa with a kitchen, which was well equipped for preparing Italian cuisine. I especially loved the Central African-inspired garden decor and the vibrant color scheme of the villa.

What could be improved: It includes a drying rack for clothes, but for longer stays, it would have been nice to have a washing machine available.

  • Marie from Denmark – 5 August 2024 (10/10)

I can't recommend this enough. We had a lovely clean and big apartment and it was perfect for a couple of days in lovely Verona. We had a lovely welcome with good tips on Verona.

  • Marius from Romania – 19 July 2024 (10/10)

Everything was excellent regarding the room and the whole venue. Just be aware of the mosquitos, they are not many but there's no need to be more than one 😀. Parking spot inside the property, decently quiet sorroundings (the occasional car and some remote music from a nearby venue on a Friday evening). The pics on booking are correct. Truth to be told, the property was so neatly decorated with African art, with explanations about the origins of each piece that sometimes I felt like in a high street store. The hosts were discreetly present, quietly helpful. Breakfast was good.

  • Pamela from United Kingdom – 20 June 2024 (8/10)

Location. The whole idea of an agriturismo style accommodation. Tranquility. Unique. Only 4 rooms in the main building. Eclectic.

What could be improved: The pillows and bed were too hard.

  • Dejan from Austria – 9 June 2024 (10/10)

Every morning fresh cake for beakfast! 🤤

The host was really nice and makes one hell of a breakfast:)

  • Serkan from Germany – 27 October 2023 (10/10)

This place is a hidden gem on the hills of Verona. Once you leave the crowded Verona, you find yourself in a silent, amazing nature just after 10 min drive.
The rooms are large and decorated in African style which looks amazing.
Apart from all, we met Domenico who was a great host! Domenico gave us tips about Verona, prepared amazing breakfast and made us feel like at home!
Many thanks for everything Domenico! We'll definetely visit again!

  • Jalmari from Finland – 4 October 2023 (10/10)

    Atmosphere and service were excellent.

What could be improved: It’s a bit far from the city. But then again you can’t have both the breathtaking views and the close proximity to the city.
