Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon the Apartament Deluxe Quattro Spade almost by accident last summer when I was wandering through Verona’s old town – I mean, I’d just come from grabbing a gelato at that little spot on Via Mazzini, and suddenly there it was, tucked away at 12 Via Quattro Spade, right in the heart of the historical center. It’s one of those places that feels like it’s been there forever, blending into the ancient stone buildings with their faded frescoes and wrought-iron balconies. Honestly, arriving after a long train ride from Milan, I was relieved to find the check-in super straightforward – no fuss, just a friendly host who handed over the keys and pointed out the nearest espresso bar (which, by the way, is essential in Italy if you’re jet-lagged). The building itself is a bit narrow, like a lot of these centro storico spots, so if you’re hauling big suitcases, well, prepare for some maneuvering up the stairs – there’s an elevator, but it’s one of those tiny European ones that fits maybe two people and a backpack. But once you’re in, oh man, the apartment opens up into this surprisingly spacious setup. I stayed in a deluxe unit, and it had these high ceilings with exposed beams that made it feel authentically Veronese, you know? The kitchenette was stocked just right – fresh linens, a proper coffee maker (not some pod machine), and even a bottle of local Valpolicella waiting on the counter. Sensory-wise, it’s all about that mix of old-world charm: the cool tile floors underfoot on a hot July day, the faint scent of blooming jasmine from the courtyard below, and in the evenings, you’d hear distant accordion tunes drifting in from Piazza delle Erbe, just a two-minute stroll away.

What really sets this place apart, though – and I say this as someone who’s bounced around a few Italian cities – is how it plants you smack in the middle of Verona’s beating heart without the overwhelming tourist crush. You’re literally steps from Juliet’s House (yeah, the one with the balcony and all those love locks), but Via Quattro Spade itself is quieter, more residential, so you get that local vibe – think neighbors chatting in dialect over morning cornetti from the bakery around the corner on Via Cappello. Parking? Forget it if you’re driving; the historical center’s mostly pedestrian, so I ditched my rental at a garage near the Arena (about a 10-minute walk) and embraced the foot traffic. Noise levels are low at night, surprisingly, especially mid-week when the summer crowds thin out after the opera season kicks off in June – but weekends can get lively with street performers. The 4-star rating feels spot-on; it’s not overly fancy, but the beds are plush, the Wi-Fi’s reliable (crucial for mapping out day trips to Lake Garda), and there’s even a small terrace where I sipped wine watching the sunset paint the rooftops golden. A minor gripe? The bathroom’s on the compact side, sort of like in many old European buildings, so if you’re tall, ducking under the shower might be a thing – but hey, that’s part of the charm, right?

All in all, if you’re heading to Verona and want to feel like you’re living the dolce vita rather than just visiting, this is your spot. It’s got that 9.4 rating for a reason – authentic, comfortable, and perfectly positioned for everything from arena concerts to lazy afternoons in hidden trattorias. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season in spring when the wisteria blooms and the streets smell like fresh rain on cobblestones. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that makes you linger a little longer.

Central location with great and easy access to many of the tourist destinations plus excellent shops with metres of address. Excellent provisions in the apartment. Very spacious and comfortable experience.

What could be improved: Nothing to say.

  • Jennifer from Australia – 19 October 2024 (10/10)

The location of the property was excellent. We were able to walk to shops, cafes, restaurants and most of the tourist sights.
The apartment was well appointed with nothing extra except your own personal items needed to make your stay comfortable.
The beds were very comfortable and the apartment quiet and relaxing.
Our host Paula was available anytime and was there to greet us on arrival and explain the apartment, give recommendations for restaurants and provide maps and general information.

What could be improved: Nothing… It was wonderful

  • Gitry from United States – 12 August 2024 (9/10)

    Cool, comfortable. Perfect location.

What could be improved: Just noting: stairs up into apartment from front door, not great for those with mobility issues. Low water pressure in shower. But the pluses far outweigh the minuses, would certainly stay there again.

  • Debra from United Kingdom – 6 August 2024 (9/10)

The location was superb. We visited all the attractions on foot. Paola was so friendly and welcoming and recommended some excellent restaurants. We would gladly stay here again when visiting Verona. So convenient and we both hed good nights” sleeps too!!

What could be improved: Nothing to note.

  • Rae from Australia – 12 July 2024 (9/10)

Everything is as it is shown and stated in the booking.

What could be improved: Road was a little bit busier than we would have liked if you are sleeping in the front room.

  • Ardit from Albania – 30 May 2024 (10/10)

Location was awsome. Positioned in the historic center, you dont need to use buses to visit sites. House was very clean

The location was fantastic. Right in the heart of Verona. The welcome from Paula was friendly , & informative & she gave us a lot of recommendations for places to visit & restaurants to try. The accommodation was perfect for us. ( 2 friends ). The bedrooms were spacious & the beds massive & comfy. It was really good to have a bathroom each ! We didn’t use the kitchen & although this was small it had everything that you might need .
When it was time to leave Paula met us as arranged to collect the keys & she ordered a taxi to take us to the airport.
Verona is a much bigger city than I was expecting, spotlessly clean , stylish & very friendly. Food & drink was very reasonably priced even in the square overlooking the Arena.
It was very easy to get to Lake Garda for the day (1 stop on the train) which was lovely , but very busy.

What could be improved: Nothing. Might be a bit of a squeeze for 4 adults as there is 1 sofa (4 dining chairs but not as comfy) however if you intend to be out exploring all day , as we were it wouldn’t be an issue.
