Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Ca’ del Buso almost by accident last fall, during one of those spontaneous road trips through the Valpolicella hills – that’s the wine country just northwest of Verona, where the air always smells faintly of ripening grapes and damp earth, especially after a light rain. I’d been weaving my rental car along those twisty roads from the city center, past Negrar’s little piazza with its old church and that quirky gelateria on Via Mazzini that locals swear by for pistachio scoops. The hotel’s tucked away on Via Costa del Buso, a quiet lane that feels more like a forgotten vineyard path than a proper address – honestly, if you’re not paying attention to your GPS (latitude around 45.51, longitude 10.97, for what it’s worth), you might drive right past it. But once you spot the stone facade, partially hidden by olive trees, it’s like stepping into a postcard from old Italy. Check-in was a breeze; the owner – this warm guy named Marco, I think – greeted me with a glass of local Amarone right there in the lobby, chatting about how the building used to be a 19th-century farmhouse. No fuss, no long lines like you’d get at those big Verona hotels near the Arena. Parking’s a bit snug in the gravel lot out back – I mean, it’s fine for a compact car, but if you’ve got something bigger, well, you might need to get creative.

What really hooked me, though, was how the place blends that rustic charm with just enough modern touches to make you feel pampered without it being over-the-top. My room overlooked the rolling hills – think exposed wooden beams, crisp white linens that smelled like fresh laundry, and a bathroom with these handmade tiles that had that cool, uneven texture underfoot. It’s rated a solid 9 out of 10 for a reason; the four-star vibe comes through in the little details, like the breakfast spread with homemade jams from nearby orchards and eggs from chickens you can actually hear clucking in the distance if you wake up early. Mornings are peaceful here, no city noise – just birds and the occasional tractor rumbling by during harvest season in September or October, when the area’s buzzing with wine tours. I wandered over to Villa Mosconi Bertani, about a 10-minute drive away, for a tasting; it’s one of those spots where you learn why Valpolicella reds are such a big deal. That said, if you’re not into driving, the hotel’s a tad isolated – no direct bus to Verona, so plan for taxis or rideshares, which aren’t always instant. But hey, that’s part of the appeal; it’s a break from the tourist crowds swarming Juliet’s balcony downtown.

All in all, if you’re chasing that authentic Italian escape – sort of a romantic hideaway or a base for exploring the wine trails – Ca’ del Buso is where I’d point you. It’s not flashy, but it feels real, you know? Like you’re staying with friends who know the best hidden spots in Negrar. I left feeling recharged, with a bottle of their recommended Ripasso tucked in my bag, and yeah, I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the vines are budding and the evenings are cool enough for a fire in the lounge. Just pack light layers – those hill breezes can sneak up on you.

Reviews

  • Caroline from United Kingdom – 2 September 2023 (9/10)

The property was incredibly spacious, with lots of personality and set in beautiful grounds, with fabulous views. It was all incredibly clean and well maintained, with great facilities – the kitchen especially was a joy to use. Francesca was amazing, very friendly, and helpful, with nothing being too much trouble. She even made us a pie! I would definitely recommend

What could be improved: The only thing that could be problematic is the location. We personally loved it, but the property is very high up and quite remote, requiring driving everywhere, although personally, I found this was part of its charm,

The house is very pretty. Sweet dogs.

What could be improved: Location, lots of brown bags, lack of supplements. Additional cost for the wellness area.
