Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Casa di David during a solo trip to Verona last spring, right when the cherry blossoms were starting to pop along the Adige River – that time of year when the city feels alive but not yet overrun with summer crowds. Pulling up to 3B Via Campanile Vecchio, which is this tucked-away street in the Borgo Roma neighborhood, south of the historic center, I was honestly relieved. It’s not smack in the middle of the tourist frenzy around Piazza delle Erbe or the Arena – you can actually hear birds chirping in the morning instead of tour buses rumbling by. The building itself looks like one of those charming old Italian townhouses, with ivy creeping up the facade and a little wrought-iron gate that creaks just enough to feel authentic. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this warm guy named Marco (I think that’s his name – or was it Matteo? Anyway, super friendly), handed over the keys with a quick chat about the best local spots for aperitivo, like that hidden bar on Via Mazzini, which is only a 15-minute walk away if you cut through the quieter backstreets. Parking’s a bit of a hassle in Verona – narrow roads and all – but they have a few spots out back, which saved me from circling forever.

What really won me over, though, was how the place feels like staying at a friend’s stylish apartment rather than some impersonal hotel chain. It’s rated 9.2 for a reason, you know? The rooms are cozy – mine had these exposed wooden beams and a balcony overlooking a tiny courtyard where you can smell fresh rosemary from the herb garden below. Honestly, the bed was like sinking into a cloud after a day wandering Verona’s cobblestone paths, though I will say the bathroom was on the compact side, sort of typical for Italian spots in older buildings. Breakfast is a highlight: they serve it in this sunlit common area with homemade crostata (that flaky tart with apricot jam – oh man, still dreaming about it) and cappuccinos strong enough to wake the dead, plus fresh fruit from the nearby market on Via Tombetta. It’s not flashy, no infinity pool or anything, but there’s a small spa area with a sauna that was perfect for unwinding after hiking up to Castel San Pietro for those panoramic views – about a 25-minute stroll from here, or you can hop on the bus from the stop just down the road. Noise-wise, it’s pretty quiet, especially off-season, but if you’re a light sleeper, note that weekends might bring some chatter from the neighborhood pizzeria around the corner; nothing major, though.

All in all, if you’re heading to Verona for the romance – think Juliet’s balcony or an opera at the Arena – Casa di David is that sweet spot where you get 4-star comfort without the stiffness. It’s ideal for couples or even families who want to feel immersed in real Veronese life, away from the overpriced spots in the center. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in autumn when the leaves turn and the streets empty out a bit. Just pack light; those stairs to the upper rooms can be a workout!
