Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Casa Isabella kind of by accident last spring when I was wandering through Verona’s old town, trying to escape the crowds around Juliet’s House – which, honestly, can feel a bit overhyped if you’re not in the mood for all that romantic kitsch. It’s tucked away on Via Caserma Ospitalvecchio, this narrow little street that’s more like a forgotten alley off the main drag near Castelvecchio, the medieval fortress that’s way more impressive than it gets credit for. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Adige River – perfect for those early morning strolls along the Ponte Scaligero, where you can watch the water rush by and smell that fresh, earthy scent after a rain. The building itself is one of those classic Italian townhouses, with faded pink stucco and wrought-iron balconies that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard, but without the pretentious vibe. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this chatty guy named Marco – or was it Matteo? – anyway, he handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the best nearby gelato spot (it’s Gelateria Ponte Pietra, by the way, and their pistachio is to die for) and warned me about the parking situation. Well, forget about driving right up – the historic center’s a nightmare for cars, all pedestrian zones and ZTL restrictions, so I ended up leaving mine in a lot over by the Arsenale and walking the five minutes. But hey, that’s Verona for you; it forces you to slow down and actually experience the place.
What really won me over, though, was how unassuming and cozy the whole setup is – it’s a 3-star spot, sure, but it punches above its weight with these little touches that make you feel at home. My room was on the second floor (no elevator, so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing), with wooden beams overhead and a view of the courtyard below, where they grow herbs that end up in the breakfast spread. Speaking of which, mornings here are a treat: fresh cornetti still warm from the oven, cappuccinos that hit just right, and that subtle aroma of espresso mingling with the faint church bells from nearby San Zeno – you know, the basilica with those stunning bronze doors? It’s not some massive buffet, but it’s authentic, and way better than the tourist traps on Via Mazzini. The rooms are compact – sort of snug, if I’m being honest, with that typical European efficiency where the bathroom’s a bit tight – but clean as a whistle, and the bed was surprisingly comfy after a day of pounding the cobblestones. Noise-wise, it’s pretty quiet at night, except maybe during the opera season in summer when the Arena’s going full blast a few blocks away; earplugs might be smart then. Oh, and they have free Wi-Fi that actually works, which is a godsend for planning your next jaunt to Lake Garda or whatever.
All in all, if you’re looking for a spot that feels genuinely Veronese without breaking the bank – I think I paid around 120 euros a night, which is a steal for the location – Casa Isabella’s your bet. It’s not flashy, but that’s the charm; it lets the city shine. I’ve recommended it to friends heading to Italy, especially couples or solo travelers who want that intimate vibe. Just remember, book ahead in peak season – Verona gets packed for the Vinitaly wine fair in April, and you don’t want to miss out on this hidden gem.

Very quiet and discreet apartment literally two minutes from the centre of Verona (the Arena and Piazza Brà). My room was clean and beautifully decorated. Provision of coffee pods and Springwater was a very thoughtful touch. Great to have access to a kitchen with kettle and microwave. Also the pillows were of excellent quality, ensuring a great night’s sleep. I really appreciated Maddalena meeting me at the apartment to explain everything to me and hand me the keys, coordinating with me very well beforehand to check my arrival time.
