Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Casa Matilde after a long train ride into Verona – you know, the kind where you’re hauling your bag over those uneven cobblestones and wondering if you’ve got the right address. It’s tucked away on Via Francesco Emilei, this quiet little side street right in the historical center, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Piazza delle Erbe. Honestly, the first thing that hit me was how unassuming the place looks from the outside – a simple three-story building with those classic Italian shutters, nothing flashy, but it sort of blends right into the neighborhood vibe. Check-in was a breeze; the owner – this friendly guy named Marco, I think – greeted me like an old pal, handing over the keys with a quick rundown of the best nearby gelato spot (it’s Gelateria Savoia on Via Roma, by the way, and their pistachio is to die for). No fancy lobby or anything, just a cozy reception area that smells faintly of espresso and fresh linens. Oh, and parking? Forget it if you’re driving – the historical center’s a nightmare for cars, so I ditched mine at the public lot near Porta Nuova and walked the 15 minutes. Worth it, though, especially in the off-season like early spring when the streets aren’t swarming with tourists.
What really makes Casa Matilde special, I mean, beyond the solid 7.4 rating that feels about right for a 3-star spot, is how it captures that authentic Verona feel without trying too hard. My room was on the second floor, overlooking a tiny courtyard – small, sure, with just enough space for a double bed and a desk, but the exposed brick walls and wooden beams gave it this charming, lived-in warmth. The bed was comfy enough, though the pillows were a bit on the flat side (pack your own if you’re picky). Breakfast is included, and it’s nothing extravagant – think croissants, yogurt, and that strong Italian coffee – but served in this sunny communal area where you can chat with other guests about their day trips to Lake Garda or the opera at the Arena, which is literally a five-minute stroll away down Via Mazzini. You know what surprised me? The quiet at night; even with all the daytime bustle from the nearby markets and Juliet’s House crowds, things hush up after 10 PM, except maybe the occasional church bell from Santa Anastasia ringing in the distance. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the rooms, and there’s no elevator, so lugging bags up stairs might be a hassle if you’re not traveling light – but for the price, it feels like a genuine slice of local life. I even wandered out one evening and caught a free concert in the piazza; stuff like that just happens here.
All in all, if you’re heading to Verona for the romance or the history – and let’s be real, who isn’t? – Casa Matilde is a smart pick for folks who want to skip the big chain hotels and dive into the real deal. It’s not luxurious, well, not by any stretch, but it’s clean, welcoming, and positions you perfectly for exploring on foot. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially during the quieter fall months when the leaves turn and the crowds thin out. Just remember to book ahead for summer opera season; the place fills up fast. Trust me, you’ll wake up to the sound of birds in that courtyard and feel like you’ve got your own little Verona hideaway.

What could be improved: Picit sötét, mert csak egy ablaka van és az internet nem igazan működik.快適な宿 – Tetsuo from Japan – 19 May 2025 (9/10)
What could be improved: Wifiが少し弱くなるときがあったので、そちらを改善されたらより良くなるかなと思いました。Werona jest super – Eliza from Poland – 15 June 2025 (5/10)
