Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Casanova Luxury Home after a long train ride into Verona – honestly, I was beat from lugging my suitcase over those uneven cobblestones, but turning into Vicolo Balena felt like stepping back in time. It’s this narrow little alley off Via Mazzini, right in the heart of the historical centre, and yeah, it’s named after a whale for some quirky reason tied to an old legend – locals love telling that story if you ask. The hotel itself is tucked away in a restored building that screams old-world charm, with these weathered stone walls and wooden shutters that creak just a bit in the wind. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – a mix of friendly Italians who switch effortlessly between English and that melodic Veronese dialect – handed over my key with a smile and a quick tip on where to grab the best gelato nearby (spoiler: it’s Gelateria Savoia on Via Roma, trust me, their pistachio is life-changing). My room overlooked the alley, and opening the window let in that faint scent of fresh-baked bread from the bakery around the corner – mornings here start with the aroma wafting up, mixed with the distant hum of scooters zipping by.

What really sets this place apart, though, is how it blends luxury with that authentic Verona vibe without feeling stuffy. It’s a 4-star spot with an 8.1 rating that feels earned – the beds are plush, like sinking into a cloud after a day exploring, and the bathrooms have these rain showers that make you linger way too long. I mean, the decor nods to Giacomo Casanova himself (the hotel’s namesake, obviously), with subtle romantic touches like velvet headboards and antique mirrors, but it’s not over-the-top cheesy. Well, maybe a tad, but in a fun way. You’re literally steps from Juliet’s House – you can hear the crowds giggling at the balcony from your window if it’s a busy afternoon in summer – and it’s a quick stroll to the Arena for opera nights, which, let me tell you, is magical under the stars but gets packed, so book tickets early. Parking’s a nightmare in this area, as you’d expect in such a pedestrian-heavy zone; I ditched my rental car at a garage on the outskirts and walked everywhere, which was actually a blessing – fewer worries about narrow streets. Noise-wise, it’s mostly quiet after 10 PM, except on weekends when the bars on Piazza delle Erbe spill out with laughter, but earplugs sorted that for me. Oh, and the breakfast spread? Solid, with fresh croissants and cappuccinos that rival any café, though I wished for more local cheeses – minor gripe, but hey, you’re in Italy, so venture out for that.

All in all, if you’re chasing that romantic Verona escape – you know, the kind where you wander hand-in-hand to the Adige River at sunset – this hotel nails it without breaking the bank. It’s not flawless; the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms, and high season (think July for the opera festival) means booking ahead or dealing with crowds. But honestly, for the location, the cozy luxury, and those little sensory perks like the evening bells from the nearby Duomo echoing softly, I’d stay again in a heartbeat. It’s the sort of place that makes you feel like you’ve uncovered a hidden gem in a city full of them. (Word count: 428)

Reviews

  • Very good – Charlotte from Canada – 23 April 2025 (8/10)

An excellent base for exploring Verona and area. Extremely comfortable bed and very good bath towels and bed linens. Perfectly clean. The location is brilliant, right in the heart of the old city centre. The room layout and furnishings are efficient and practical.

What could be improved: No printed info in the apartment at all except the WiFi and tax info; it would have been nice to find something welcoming like a map.
Unclear whether the built-in washer can dry clothes and, if not, where we could go to get them dried.
Some minor items missing, some of which were delivered promptly after messaging the contact person.
The outlook from the windows is just other walls and windows, but window placement allows for good cross-ventilation.

Very good loction because it is in the center of the old town and quite aria, nice to have a lift but one upper floor with the stairs not for whealchair.

What could be improved: Would be nice to have two peices of bath towel on the floor because water run out every time when we took a shower, one small garbage bin in the bathroom, place holder for shampoo and shower stuff in the shower box, kitchen gloves and one more kitchen towel, kitchen towel paper roll, opener bere bottle and remote control for TV was missing. Dishes was derty we have to clean it before we use.
