Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Case VR Holiday Dimora Caleffi Masin last summer during one of those sweltering Verona afternoons – you know, when the sun beats down on the cobblestones and everyone’s ducking into gelaterias for relief. It’s tucked away at 1 Via San Vitale, right in that quieter pocket of the historic center, just a short wander from the bustling Ponte Pietra bridge over the Adige River. Honestly, finding parking in Verona is a nightmare if you’re driving in – those narrow streets aren’t forgiving, and I ended up leaving my car at a lot near the Castelvecchio and hoofing it the rest of the way. But once I got there, the place felt like a hidden gem, this restored old dimora with its weathered stone facade and those heavy wooden doors that creak just enough to make you feel like you’re stepping back in time. Check-in was a breeze; the host – a chatty local named Marco, I think – handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the best nearby osterias, like that little spot on Via Pellicciai where they do the most amazing risotto all’amarone. No sterile lobby vibes here; it’s more like arriving at a friend’s elegant townhouse.

What really won me over were the rooms – mine was this spacious suite with exposed brick walls and these massive windows that let in the golden afternoon light, filtering through lace curtains that smelled faintly of lavender (they must use some local detergent or something). It’s rated 4 stars, but it punches above that with thoughtful touches: a kitchenette stocked with fresh espresso pods and even a bottle of Valpolicella waiting in the fridge – perfect after a day traipsing around the Arena or Juliet’s balcony, which is only about a 10-minute stroll away. I mean, Verona gets packed in July with opera season crowds spilling out from the Arena, but this place is far enough from the main tourist drag that you don’t hear the constant hum of street performers at night. Well, except maybe the occasional church bell from Santa Anastasia nearby, which sort of adds to the charm. The bed was ridiculously comfortable, all crisp linens and fluffy pillows, though fair warning, the bathroom’s a bit compact if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage – I had to Tetris my suitcase around the bidet. Still, waking up to the scent of baking bread from the panificio down the street made mornings magical, and there’s free Wi-Fi that’s actually reliable for streaming or planning your next day trip to Lake Garda.

Look, if you’re heading to Verona for the romance or the history – or heck, just to escape the chaos of bigger Italian cities like Venice – this spot’s a winner with its 9.3 rating that feels well-earned. It’s not flawless; the stairs can be a haul if you’ve got mobility issues (no elevator in these old buildings), and during peak season, you might want to book early because it fills up fast with repeat visitors. But honestly, staying here made me feel like a local, sipping coffee on the balcony overlooking the alley while watching nonnas gossip below. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better base for soaking in Verona’s soul without the overpriced hype of those chain hotels near the station. If I go back – and I probably will – this is where I’d crash again, no question.

Fantastic location. Central but not on main road. Walking distance to everything.

What could be improved: Toilet in bathroom off hall leaked, more lamps needed for reading and we also experienced a power cut, which we were then informed after contacting the host happens frequently if too many appliances are used at once.

  • Melanie from France – 30 September 2023 (10/10)
