Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Domus Verona – Centralissima e antica Residenza Cappello almost by accident while wandering through Verona’s old town last summer, and honestly, it felt like stepping back in time without sacrificing any of the comforts you’d want on a trip. It’s tucked right at 49 Via Cappello, smack in the historical center – yeah, that’s the same street as Juliet’s famous balcony, so expect a bit of a crowd during the day with tourists snapping photos and leaving love notes on the walls. But here’s the thing: the hotel itself is this beautifully restored ancient residence, all exposed brick and wooden beams that whisper stories from centuries ago. I mean, Verona’s got that romantic vibe anyway, with the Adige River curving around the city and the Arena just a short stroll away, but staying here puts you right in the heart of it. My room overlooked the bustling courtyard – nothing fancy, but the morning light filtering through those arched windows, mixed with the faint scent of espresso from the cafe downstairs, made waking up feel special. Oh, and parking? Forget about it if you’re driving; the whole area’s pedestrian-only, so I left my car at the public lot near Piazza Bra and walked the five minutes over – totally worth it for the immersion.
What really sets this place apart, though – and I say this as someone who’s bounced around a few spots in Italy – is how it blends that old-world charm with just enough modern touches to keep things practical. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re cozy, with these plush beds that had me sleeping like a baby despite the occasional street noise filtering up from below (it quiets down after 10 PM, thankfully, especially mid-week when the tour groups thin out). Breakfast was a highlight – served in this quaint communal area with fresh pastries, local cheeses, and prosciutto that tasted like it came straight from a nearby market on Via Mazzini. The staff? Super friendly, like that one guy at check-in who chatted about the best gelato spot on Corso Porta Borsari (it’s Gelateria Ponte Pietra, by the way – go for the pistachio). Well, sort of a minor gripe: no elevator in the building, so if you’ve got heavy luggage, brace yourself for the stairs – but hey, it’s a 4-star in an ancient setup, so that adds to the authenticity. And the rating’s spot on at 8.9; it’s not trying to be some sleek chain hotel, but more like staying in a friend’s historic apartment, complete with free Wi-Fi that actually works and air conditioning that saved me during that July heatwave.
All in all, if you’re heading to Verona for the opera season at the Arena or just to soak up the Shakespearean romance – you know, without the crowds overwhelming you at night – this is the spot I’d recommend hands down. It’s not the cheapest, but for the location, you can’t beat being steps from Piazza delle Erbe’s lively market stalls or a quick gelato run. I left feeling like I’d actually lived a slice of Veronese life, rather than just passing through. Trust me, book it for a weekend in spring when the wisteria blooms along the streets – magical.

What could be improved: Difficultly checking in and had to wait around in the street for some time as no staff availableExceptional – Valentina from Australia – 6 February 2025 (10/10)

What could be improved: It would have been nice to have complimentary tea on top of coffeeExceptional – Angela from United Kingdom – 28 December 2024 (10/10)
Spacious, clean apartment in the centre of the old town. Somewhere the whole family could gather for Christmas and be comfortable and close to all the action! The staff were super helpful, only a WhatsApp away, and sorted our parking /registration issue efficiently.
What could be improved: Nothing, all good. The apartment is older style, so bathrooms are not "modern" but it didn't worry us, and we were happy to use the facilities.Perfect central apartment to be able to see Verona without a car. – Linda from United Kingdom – 16 October 2024 (10/10)
The apartment was very clean and comfortable. It was spacious and centrally located (5 min walk to Arena). The apartment contacts were so helpful, especially in providing us with taxi bookings and responding so quickly to our queries. There was a lift in the apartment if you needed it. Tuday supermarket was a 1 min walk away. Piazza Erbe with its restaurants and market was about 5 mins walk. Lots of shops nearby. Also the river was 5 min walk away too. Shower gel and soap provided. Must comfortable beds we’ve ever had in an apartment.
What could be improved: Extractor fan in en-suite was a bit noisy. On Friday/Saturday evenings be prepared for a bit of noise on the street as people go home but that’s the trade-off for being central and to be fair the bedrooms are at the back so it’s fairly muffled and it didn’t last long anyway.Comfortable – great location – elevator!!! – Peggy from Canada – 10 October 2024 (10/10)
Such a beautiful space with windows in two sides. Wonderful beds!
What could be improved: Not enough towels for us Canadians – we like a few big towels per personExceptional – Jenny from Australia – 15 September 2024 (10/10)
