Hotel Description

You know, when I first rolled into Verona last spring, I was dead set on avoiding those overpriced spots right by the Arena – I mean, who needs to fight through tour groups just to grab a morning espresso? So I booked Fiore di Pietra 3 in Borgo Roma, tucked away on Via delle Pietre, and honestly, it turned out to be one of those hidden gems that makes you feel like you’ve cracked the local code. It’s on the primo piano – that’s the first floor up, no elevator, so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing – but the building itself has this charming old-stone vibe, like it’s been watching over the neighborhood forever. I arrived around dusk after a quick bus from the Porta Nuova station (it’s only about a 15-minute ride, or a pleasant walk if you’re not hauling luggage), and the host greeted me with a genuine smile and a shot of limoncello – none of that scripted hotel spiel. The street’s pretty quiet, lined with those little family-run shops selling fresh pasta and cheeses, and there’s even a tiny park nearby where locals walk their dogs at sunset. Parking’s street-side and can be a bit of a hunt during Verona’s busy opera season in summer, but I snagged a spot easily in April.

What really won me over, though, was how this 3-star place punches way above its weight – that 9.4 rating isn’t hype. The rooms are compact, sure, but spotless and thoughtfully done up with these soft, textured linens that smell faintly of lavender (they must use some local detergent, because it lingered nicely). My window overlooked a courtyard with actual blooming flowers – fitting for a name like Fiore di Pietra, which means “stone flower” – and mornings started with the distant hum of scooters on Via Tombetta, just a block over, blending into the aroma of baking bread from the bakery downstairs. Breakfast was simple but killer: fresh croissants, yogurt with honey from the Veneto hills, and coffee strong enough to wake the dead. It’s not fancy – no spa or gym here – but there’s reliable Wi-Fi, and the air conditioning actually works without sounding like a jet engine, which is a godsend in July’s humidity. I did notice the walls are a tad thin; you might hear neighbors chatting in Italian late at night, but it added to the authentic feel, you know? Well, sort of – earplugs helped on the one noisy evening when a nearby festa spilled over.

All in all, if you’re after that real Verona experience without the tourist crush, this is your spot. Borgo Roma’s got that lived-in charm – hop on a bike (they rent them cheap at the corner shop on Via Scuderlando) and you’re at the Adige River in minutes for a riverside stroll, or catch a quick train to Lake Garda for a day trip. It’s affordable, welcoming, and leaves you with stories, like chatting with the owner about the best hidden gelato spot in the neighborhood (spoiler: it’s Gelateria Roma, two streets away). I’d go back in a heartbeat – especially off-season when the crowds thin out and you can really soak in the quiet magic of the place.

Tiszta, jól felszerelt szállás. Boltok, park a közelben. Pár percre található az autópálya lehajtótol.

What could be improved: Ha délután vagy este érkezel, picit nehézkesebb a parkolás.
