I remember stumbling upon Hotel Bologna almost by accident last summer – well, not really by accident, since I’d booked it online after hearing from a local friend in Verona that it’s one of those hidden gems in the historical center that doesn’t scream “tourist trap.” Tucked away on Piazzetta Scalette Rubiani, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Via Mazzini (you know, that pedestrian street lined with shops where everyone grabs gelato after seeing the Arena), it’s got this cozy, unpretentious vibe that feels like staying at an old aunt’s place – if your aunt had impeccable taste in restoring 18th-century buildings. Honestly, arriving after a long train ride from Milan, I was wiped out, and the check-in was a breeze; the front desk guy – Marco, I think his name was – chatted about the best time to hit Juliet’s balcony (early morning to dodge the crowds) while handing over my key. No fuss, no long lines, and they even helped with my luggage up those narrow stairs – yeah, no elevator, which is a minor gripe if you’re hauling heavy bags, but it adds to the authentic old-world charm.

What really won me over, though, was how the place punches way above its three-star rating – I mean, with a solid 9 from folks who’ve stayed, it’s no fluke. My room overlooked the little piazza, and mornings started with the faint chime of bells from nearby San Zeno (that’s the basilica locals actually go to, not just for photos), mixed with the smell of fresh espresso wafting up from the breakfast room downstairs. Speaking of breakfast, it’s nothing fancy – think croissants that are actually flaky, local cheeses, and those tiny jars of apricot jam – but it’s hearty enough to fuel a day wandering to Piazza delle Erbe, which is literally a five-minute stroll away. The rooms are compact, sure, sort of like cozy nests with wooden beams and crisp white linens that feel cool against your skin after a hot July afternoon, but they’re spotless and quiet at night, even with the occasional scooter buzzing down the alley. Parking’s a bit of a hassle in the center – I ended up using a nearby garage on Via Roma for about 20 euros a day – but once you’re settled, you forget about the car entirely. Oh, and the Wi-Fi? Surprisingly zippy for streaming a quick episode before bed, which was a lifesaver after traipsing around the Adige River paths.

Look, if you’re heading to Verona – especially in shoulder season like May or September when the crowds thin out but the weather’s still balmy – this is the spot to base yourself. It’s not some glossy chain; it’s got that lived-in soul that makes you feel like you’re part of the city, not just visiting. You could splurge on fancier places near the Arena, but why bother when Hotel Bologna gives you prime location, genuine hospitality, and that rare sense of peace in a touristy town? I left wishing I had an extra day – actually, make that two – to just sip wine on their tiny terrace and people-watch. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that sticks with you long after you’ve packed up.

  Great location just by the arena in the historic centre. Welcoming reception and upgraded our room to a suite. Spotlessly clean. Breakfast buffet was excellent.

  It was a separate building, but less than 2 minutes walk to the Arena. Quiet and well located, the property offers a location in the heart of Verona. The bathroom was new, the bed wasn't the most conformable but still great value for money considering the location
  
  What could be improved: The lack of privacy, considering that the lounge was in common with other 4/5 rooms. Opened the door, I had a sofa and tables used by guests to have dinner or some rest. I tried to go go sleep early but you could hear other people around. Not a bid deal, but more a Bed and Breakfast style than Hotel.

  Annabell excellently managed our check in was very attentive to every request. Perfect location near Arena for Opera as well as restaurants and shopping. Bicycles free for guest use were a great way to explore Verona. Great breakfast
