Hotel Description

You know, the first time I stumbled upon Hotel Gabbia D’Oro, I was wandering down Corso Porta Borsari after grabbing a quick espresso at one of those tiny cafes near Piazza Bra – the kind where locals argue over soccer scores while sipping their morning fixes. It’s right there at number 4, tucked into this gorgeous 18th-century palazzo that honestly feels like you’ve stepped back in time without any of the dust or discomfort. I mean, Verona’s historical center is a maze of narrow streets and ancient Roman gates, and this place is smack in the middle of it, just a stone’s throw from the Arena – perfect if you’re timing your trip for opera season in summer, though fair warning, it gets packed with tourists then, and the evening crowds can make the walk back a bit noisy. But pulling up to the entrance, with its heavy wooden doors and that subtle golden cage motif (gabbia d’oro means “golden cage,” after all – clever, right?), I felt like I’d found a hidden gem amid the chaos.

What really sets it apart, though – and I’m not exaggerating here – is how they’ve blended all that old-world charm with just enough modern comfort to make you forget you’re in a building that’s seen centuries. My room overlooked the courtyard, with these massive velvet curtains that muffled the street sounds (thank goodness, because those Vespas zipping by at dawn can be a rude awakening). The bed was like sinking into a cloud, all crisp linens and feather pillows, and the bathroom had this clawfoot tub that begged for a long soak after trekking to Juliet’s balcony – which is literally a five-minute stroll away, by the way, down Via Cappello. Breakfast was a highlight; they serve it in this lush, plant-filled atrium that smells faintly of jasmine and fresh-baked cornetti, and the staff – oh, they’re pros, chatting about the best spots for aperitivo on Via Mazzini without making it feel scripted. Parking’s a hassle in the centro storico, as you’d expect – I ended up using the valet service, which was seamless but added a few euros – and well, the lighting in the rooms is a tad dim for late-night reading (historic fixtures and all that), but honestly, it adds to the romantic vibe. If you’re into sensory details, the textured stone walls and antique furnishings give everything this tactile, lived-in feel, like you’re staying in a noble’s residence rather than some sterile chain.

All in all, if you’re heading to Verona for that mix of history, romance, and maybe a bit of opera magic, Hotel Gabbia D’Oro is the spot – it’s got that 9.1 rating for a reason, you know? It’s not the cheapest (five stars in the heart of it all, what do you expect?), but for a special trip, say a honeymoon or anniversary, it’s worth every penny. I left feeling like I’d actually experienced the soul of the city, not just passed through – and trust me, with spots like Piazza delle Erbe right around the corner for evening gelato runs, you’ll want to linger. Just book early if it’s high season; this golden cage fills up fast.

Located in the perfect spot in Verona historical city.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

This is truly one of the loveliest and most charming boutique hotels we’ve come across in a long time. Every detail is thoughtfully decorated with exquisite style and taste, creating an atmosphere where you instantly feel at home.

The staff are exceptionally kind and attentive, ensuring that every need is met in the best possible way. The winter garden is absolutely delightful, complete with a marvelous parrot named Romeo, adding to its unique charm. The breakfast room feels like stepping into a beautifully curated museum.

We absolutely loved our stay here and cannot wait to return. It’s a gem we’ll treasure for years to come!

Staff were the best we have experienced. Polite, efficient and nothing was too much bother. They bent over backwards to offer advice, sort out problems and proactively with us during our 9 day stay. In fact they always went an extra mile with us, during our stay.
The hotel was very centrally located and charming and eclectic with the furnishings and ornaments.
If you are looking for a modern hotel, this is not the place for you. The building is apparently 14th/15th century and very quirky in the nicest sense.
We will definitely go back and stay there in the future. It was fantastic.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Michael from Austria – 7 October 2024 (9/10)

the hotel is in the very city center and provides valet parking. we enjoyed an amazing breakfast and the building is full of history. of course, it is a little bit old and old style but perfect fit for Verona

What could be improved: to get there by car is hard because the hotel is located in a pedestrian area – so watch out for instructions from the hotel

  • Hillal from United Arab Emirates – 26 September 2024 (9/10)

Beautiful furniture, amazing staff, excellent location

What could be improved: Nothing, everything was perfect

  • John from Ireland – 25 September 2024 (8/10)

    Location was brilliant

What could be improved: No restaurant in the hotel for an evening meal

  • Richard from United Kingdom – 23 September 2024 (9/10)

    Location. Staff and facilities

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • David from Netherlands – 15 September 2024 (9/10)

The photos on the site don't do justice to this fantastic hotel. The photos make it look a bit messy/crowded, but it was very cozy and clean. True 5-star service in the hotel, and excellent breakfast, and that right at the corner of the main market square of the city.

What could be improved: The bathroom was very dated, could do with an upgrade. If they would, then I'd give the hotel a 10 score.

  • Anouk from Luxembourg – 16 August 2024 (9/10)

    The kindness off the staff

What could be improved: The bathrooms could do with a bit of refreshing

  • Rosalina from United States – 14 July 2024 (9/10)

    Friendly service
