Well, it’s Verona’s old town, so forget about easy spots; I ended up in that public lot near Porta Palio gate, which is fine if you’re okay with a five-minute walk, but during peak tourist season in July, it gets chaotic with all the Fiats zipping around. Anyway, once I buzzed in and climbed those creaky wooden stairs (no elevator, mind you, so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing), the owner greeted me like an old friend, handing over keys with a fresh espresso in hand. The place feels more like a chic apartment than a hotel – exposed brick walls that smell faintly of aged stone and lavender, and that namesake little balcony overlooking the street, where I sipped wine watching locals cycle by at dusk.

What really sets Il Balconcino apart, though – and I mean this after staying in a dozen spots around Veneto – is how it nails that perfect blend of old-world charm and modern perks without trying too hard. The rooms are spacious for a historical building, with these high ceilings and plush beds that actually let you sleep through the faint hum of morning traffic below (it’s quieter than you’d think, especially after 10 PM when the bars on nearby Corso Porta Borsari wind down). Breakfast was a highlight – served on that balcony if the weather’s nice, with croissants still warm from some bakery down the street, prosciutto that tastes like it was sliced fresh, and coffee strong enough to wake the dead. I appreciated the little touches, like the stocked minibar with local Valpolicella wines (try the Amarone if you’re splurging) and the bathroom’s rainfall shower that washes away the day’s sweat from exploring Piazza delle Erbe or the Arena. Oh, and if you’re into history, it’s a quick stroll to Juliet’s balcony – yeah, the touristy one, but early morning before the crowds hit, it’s magical. One minor gripe? The Wi-Fi can be spotty during busy hours, but hey, you’re in Verona; put the phone down and people-watch instead.

All in all, if you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re living in Verona rather than just visiting – maybe a couple on a romantic getaway or a solo traveler dodging the big chain hotels – this 4-star gem with its near-perfect 9.5 rating is a no-brainer. It’s not flashy, but that’s the point; it’s authentic, cozy, and positioned so you can hit the highlights without wasting time on buses. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a secret, and honestly, I’d book it again in a heartbeat for that balcony view alone, especially in spring when the air smells like blooming wisteria. Just remember to reserve early – it fills up fast during opera season at the Arena.

  Lovely, comfortable space which has everything you need for a stay in Verona. The bed was very comfortable and small kitchen had a great coffee machine. The host greeted us on arrival and left lots of brilliant recommendations of places to eat and drink. Very close to city centre, but still very quiet and a lovely base in a very walkable city.
