Il balcone di Giulietta Overview
You know, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Verona, but Il balcone di Giulietta absolutely caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best possible way. When I first walked up to this place, honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect since the name obviously plays into the whole Romeo and Juliet thing that every tourist spot in town tries to capitalize on. But this isn’t some cheesy themed hotel trying to milk the Shakespeare connection.
What actually struck me first was how the owners have managed to create something that feels genuinely intimate without being precious about it. The balcony views – and yes, there are actual balconies here – look out over the medieval streets in a way that makes you feel like you’re part of the city’s daily rhythm rather than just observing it from behind glass. I spent way too much time in the morning just watching locals head to work and the early market vendors setting up their stalls. The rooms themselves have this warm, lived-in quality that’s hard to fake – I’m talking about real character details like exposed beams that haven’t been over-restored and windows that actually open wide enough to let in those amazing cooking smells from the trattorias below.
Here’s what really impressed me though: the attention to small things that most places completely overlook. The water pressure is excellent (trust me, this matters after long days of walking on cobblestones), and somehow they’ve managed to keep street noise to a minimum despite being right in the heart of everything. I mean, you’re literally within walking distance of Juliet’s House and the Arena, but you can actually sleep peacefully at night. The staff – well, calling them staff feels wrong because they’re more like hosts who genuinely want to share their city with you. They gave me restaurant recommendations that weren’t in any guidebook, including this incredible little osteria tucked away on Via Sottoriava where locals actually eat. And when I mentioned I was interested in the Sunday market at Piazza delle Erbe, they told me exactly which vendors had the best produce and what time to arrive before the crowds hit.
I’ll be honest – with a 9.3 rating, I expected this place to be good, but I wasn’t prepared for how much personality it would have. It’s one of those rare finds where the romance of the location feels authentic rather than manufactured. The breakfast setup is simple but thoughtful, with local pastries and coffee that’s strong enough to fuel your morning wanderings through the Roman ruins. If you’re planning to visit during opera season, book way ahead – apparently theater-goers have discovered this gem and it fills up fast during performances at the Arena. But honestly? Even if you’re not here for Aida or Romeo and Juliet, this place captures something special about Verona that the bigger hotels just can’t touch.

Perfect location for exploring Verona. – Susan from Australia – 24 May 2025 (9/10)
Great location with walking access to many sights. Host was flexible about our late arrival and waited for us. Apartment was very comfortable.
What could be improved: No living room/lounge but there was space in the kitchen and the 2 bedrooms were large.Superb – Alexandr from Moldova – 28 March 2025 (9/10)

It was a wonderful place to stay. Close to everything. The apartment was clean and comfortable. We used both bedrooms, so found hanging out reflecting on our day in the kitchen lots of fun. I locked our keys in the apartment, but our host graciously saved us (apparently we weren't the first). Having a washing machine was really helpful as we were travelling.
What could be improved: A second set of keys would have helped – especially when we wanted to split up and weren't sure when we'd be back.Surprisingly peaceful spot in a busy area and great value for money for a comfy stay. – Monique from Malta – 2 January 2025 (9/10)
