It’s tucked away on Via Leoncino 11, right in the historical center, up on the fourth floor (piano quarto, as they say here), which means no elevator if you’re hauling luggage – honestly, that was a bit of a workout after a long train ride from Milan. But once I buzzed in and climbed those creaky stairs, the place hit me with this charming, lived-in vibe, like crashing at an artist’s loft. The owner, this warm local guy named Marco (I think? – well, something like that), greeted me with a quick espresso and a chat about the best nearby gelato spots, which felt way more genuine than your typical hotel check-in. No fancy lobby, just a cozy entryway with mismatched vintage chairs and walls dotted with quirky paintings – sort of bohemian, as the name suggests, with that faint scent of old wood and fresh linens that screams authentic Italy.

What really sold me was how it puts you smack in the heart of things without the overwhelming bustle. You’re steps from Piazza delle Erbe, where the morning market buzzes with vendors hawking fresh cherries and prosciutto – I grabbed breakfast there every day, dodging the occasional pigeon. And get this, it’s a short wander to Juliet’s House on Via Cappello, but if you know the back alleys like Via Stella, you can avoid the tour groups and slip into quieter spots for a spritz at sunset. The rooms? Mine was this attic-style nook with sloped ceilings, a comfy queen bed draped in soft, slightly faded quilts, and a tiny balcony overlooking the rooftops – perfect for people-watching with the distant hum of scooters below. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful at night, though you might hear church bells from Santa Anastasia chiming early (a Verona staple, I mean, it’s part of the charm). Practical stuff: parking’s a nightmare in the center, so ditch the car at the Arsenale lot nearby and walk; Wi-Fi’s decent but spotty in the corners, and breakfast is simple – croissants, yogurt, that sort of thing – nothing gourmet, but it fuels you up for exploring. Oh, and during peak season like July for the opera festival at the Arena (which is literally a 5-minute stroll away), book early because this place fills up with creative types escaping the pricier hotels.

All in all, if you’re after that unpolished, soulful stay in Verona – not some sterile chain – La Soffitta’s your spot. It’s got a solid 7.8 rating for a reason: great value for a 3-star, with that intimate feel that makes you linger. Sure, the stairs might not suit everyone, and the bathroom was compact (think European-style, no massive shower), but honestly, it added to the adventure. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the city’s magic feels all yours – you know what, pair it with a walk along the Adige River at dusk, and you’ve got yourself a trip to remember.

  Lovely quirky place with everything required. Found the choice of tiles funny and added to the quirkiness. Instructions were spot on and communication good. Location ideal for anywhere. Easy to get to. Loved the little secluded balcony area with lovely views at night.
  
  What could be improved: It has low ceilings but this didn’t bother us. The bed needs addressing and for this reason only, we would not come back. The bed is old. You can feel the spring and the noise every time you move. I woke up with backache and didn’t sleep. If the bed was upgraded we would love to stay again.

  The flat is smack in the middle of all places you want to see but quiet and peaceful. It’s tiny and not luxurious but super cosy and nice. I felt at home from the first moment. The terrace has an awesome view, birds flying and church bells ringing, I spent my mornings there in peace.

  What could be improved: It’s a bit run down, not the Ritz Carlton but hey, it is a little quaint home. Bumped my head a few times as the ceiling is low but I’m 190 and learned to be careful. I would not go there with 3 people but for one or 2 it’s really nice.

  Super convenient and comfortable with everything. Amazing decorations, there are almost everything you need there and the air conditioning worked perfectly. The view from the rooftop which is also the room we stayed was absolutely stunning, I would totally have a wine night out there in the autumn.
