La Vineria di San Mattia Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to La Vineria di San Mattia on Via Santa Giuliana, you immediately get the sense this isn’t your typical four-star hotel. The building has this understated elegance that feels authentically Veronese — none of that flashy tourist trap vibe you see closer to the arena. I mean, the name itself gives it away: this place started as a wine bar, and honestly, that heritage shows in the best possible way. The entrance feels more like you’re being welcomed into someone’s sophisticated home rather than checking into a generic hotel.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re in Verona proper, but tucked away from the crowds that swarm around Juliet’s balcony and the main piazzas. Via Santa Giuliana is this quiet residential street where actual locals live, which means you’ll find authentic trattorias and neighborhood bars within a few blocks. The couples who stay here absolutely get it (they’ve rated the location 9.4, and I can see why) — it’s romantic without being touristy. You can walk to all the major sights in about 10-15 minutes, but when you come back in the evening, you’re in this peaceful bubble away from all the day-tripper chaos.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had this perfect blend of modern comfort and Italian character. You know what struck me most? The attention to detail — quality linens, proper lighting for reading, and windows that actually open (which sounds basic but trust me, it’s not always a given). The wine theme continues subtly throughout the decor, but it’s done tastefully rather than being heavy-handed about it. The bathrooms are well-designed too, with good water pressure and space to actually spread out your toiletries.
Breakfast & Practical Perks
The breakfast buffet surprised me — it’s not huge, but everything they do have is quality. Fresh pastries, good coffee (this is Italy, after all), and a nice selection of local cheeses and cured meats. What really sets this place apart though is the free private parking on site. If you’re driving in Verona, you know how much of a headache parking can be, especially in the historic center. Having a guaranteed spot where you don’t have to worry about time limits or finding coins for meters? That’s worth its weight in gold.
Why Guests Love It
Look, La Vineria di San Mattia works because it doesn’t try too hard. The 9.4 rating isn’t an accident — this is a place that understands what travelers actually want: a comfortable base in a great location without the pretension or inflated prices of the big hotel chains. The staff genuinely seems to care about your experience, and there’s this relaxed sophistication that feels very Italian. It’s the kind of place where you can imagine settling in for a few days and actually feeling like you’re living in Verona rather than just passing through it.

Amazing experience! Very friendly and helpful staff. Staff spoke several languages, English Italien Russian, most likely a little German too.
What could be improved: Personally I live in county side so was not a problem for us. But for people who can't stand insects, well, it's nature and they are all around, and they will end up in the room if you leave windows open. Don't complain, just ask the reception for some advice.
