La Vineria di San Mattia Overview

You know what caught me off guard about La Vineria di San Mattia? The name makes it sound like just another wine bar, but this is actually a proper 4-star hotel that happens to have serious wine credentials. I mean, when you’re pulling a 9.4 rating, you’re clearly doing something right beyond just pouring good Chianti.

The whole place has this authentic Italian charm that doesn’t feel staged for tourists – you can tell locals actually hang out here too. The wine selection is honestly incredible (they weren’t kidding about the “vineria” part), and the staff knows their stuff without being pretentious about it. What I really appreciated was how they treated the wine experience as part of staying there, not some expensive add-on. The rooms are comfortable in that European way where everything’s well-made but not oversized – honestly perfect after spending days walking around cobblestone streets. The building itself has character, you know? Those thick walls that keep things cool in summer and the kind of windows that actually open (revolutionary concept, right?).

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t your typical chain hotel experience, and that’s exactly why it works. Check-in feels more like being welcomed into someone’s home, which can be amazing when you want that personal touch but might feel a bit much if you’re the type who prefers anonymous efficiency. The location puts you right in the heart of things without the tourist-trap chaos, and I actually saw guests coming back night after night to try different wines from their collection. Small details matter here – like how they remember what you ordered the night before, or the way they’ll casually mention which local spots are worth your time (and more importantly, which ones to skip). The breakfast setup is simple but uses really good local ingredients, and honestly, starting your day with proper Italian coffee and pastry while planning your route through town – well, that’s sort of what travel should feel like, isn’t it?

Beautifull environment. The room was beautifull too. We ate in San Mattia restaurant and the food and the wine were great and tasty.
We fell in love with the farm's own olive oil and bought some to bring it back home.

The place is absolutely amazing, very beautiful and with a cozy family atmosphere, the restaurant is superb and the staff is very kind. The breakfast is so good with fresh local ingredients, we loved our stay and are dreaming of getting back there in a more warmer weather.

What could be improved: The mattress where a bit old and uncomfortable. But everything else was amazing.

  • Robert from United Kingdom – 3 February 2025 (10/10)

    Location and staff

What could be improved: All good

  • Igor from Greece – 29 November 2024 (10/10)

Amazing experience! Very friendly and helpful staff. Staff spoke several languages, English Italien Russian, most likely a little German too.

What could be improved: Personally I live in county side so was not a problem for us. But for people who can't stand insects, well, it's nature and they are all around, and they will end up in the room if you leave windows open. Don't complain, just ask the reception for some advice.
