Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to Mario Number 8 on a drizzly afternoon last spring – you know, that time of year when Verona’s historical center starts buzzing with early tourists but hasn’t hit the full summer crush yet. The address is right on Via Alberto Mario, this quiet little side street tucked away from the main drag of Corso Porta Nuova, but honestly, it’s closer than you think to all the action. I mean, you’re just a five-minute stroll from the Arena di Verona, where they do those epic opera nights in July and August – if you’re into that, book tickets early because it sells out fast. Parking was a bit of a hassle, as it always is in the old town; I ended up circling for ten minutes before snagging a spot on a nearby pay lot off Via Roma, but once you’re there, you forget about the car because everything’s walkable. The building itself has that classic Veronese vibe – think faded ochre walls with wrought-iron balconies, and the entrance smells faintly of espresso from the café next door. It’s not flashy, but it feels authentic, like stepping into someone’s well-loved home rather than a chain hotel.

Inside, the place surprised me – for a 3-star spot with an 8.7 rating, it punches above its weight in charm without trying too hard. Check-in was a breeze; the owner (I think his name was Marco? Anyway, super friendly guy with a thick Veneto accent) handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the best gelato spots nearby – try the one on Via Mazzini if you’re craving pistachio. My room was on the second floor, overlooking a tiny courtyard that’s dead quiet at night, which is a godsend because the streets can get noisy with scooters zipping by until late. The bed was comfy enough, with those crisp white linens that feel cool against your skin after a day of wandering, but fair warning, the bathroom’s on the smaller side – sort of compact, like a lot of these older buildings converted into hotels. No big complaints, though; the Wi-Fi was solid for streaming, and breakfast (included, which is nice) was a simple spread of fresh croissants, yogurt, and that strong Italian coffee that wakes you right up. Oh, and if you’re traveling light, they have a little luggage storage area that’s handy for late check-outs. I even caught a whiff of blooming jasmine from the courtyard vines one morning – little details like that make it memorable.

All in all, if you’re not chasing luxury but want a spot that feels genuinely tied to Verona’s soul, Mario Number 8 is worth it. It’s perfect for couples or solo travelers who plan to spend most of their time exploring – like popping over to Juliet’s House for that obligatory balcony photo, or grabbing aperitivo at a bar on Piazza delle Erbe, which is literally a ten-minute walk. Sure, it might not have a pool or spa (who needs that in a city this walkable?), but the value’s there, especially off-season when rates dip. I left feeling like I’d gotten a real taste of local life, not just a bed for the night – and isn’t that what travel’s about? If you’re heading to Verona, give it a shot; just remember to wear comfy shoes for all those cobblestone streets.

Reviews

  • I really enjoyed my stay — highly recommended! – Chernozubova from Cyprus – 11 July 2025 (10/10)

Everything was great — the place was clean, cozy, and very comfortable. Great location and easy check-in!

What could be improved: Nothing to complain about.

  • Excellent location and price and owner was in constant contact, easy to use online and via WhatsApp – Lisa from United Kingdom – 26 June 2025 (10/10)

The location was great, just one street behind main shopping road and two streets from Verona arena, the host responded straights away via WhatsApp, the booking and instructions were great, had a fridge in the room, had a fan, only wish it had air con. But we was their in June and room was not to hot.

What could be improved: It does need air con really, as when u have shower and hairdryer on, it is all extra heat, but that’s the only thing.

  • Good – Pietro from United Arab Emirates – 9 July 2025 (7/10)

Amazing location, beautiful historical building, charming room, kind and very responsive staff

What could be improved: No air conditioning (we were there during a heat wave – it should be clearly communicated). Fan and dehumidifier are available. This made our staying acceptable but not ideal.

Julia from Russia – 13 July 2025 (10/10)

  • Superb – Xhovana from Italy – 20 June 2025 (9/10)

Mario Number 8 the best place ever!!!

Centralissima – Franca from Italy – 17 June 2025 (8/10)

La posizione e il palazzo. Ottima comunicazione via messaggi

What could be improved: Mancanza di aria condizionata

  • Posizione e pulizia eccellente, servizi e struttura da rivedere. – Moncada from Italy – 21 June 2025 (7/10)

Posizione eccezionale, praticamente in piazza Bra davanti l’arena di Verona.
    Struttura molto pulita.
    Accoglienza gentile.

What could be improved: Ci sono fili elettrici a vista senza le opportune placche.

  • Sembra tutto molto improvvisato.

  • Exceptional – Gaia from Italy – 11 July 2025 (10/10)

  • Exceptional – Perunovic-cicovic from Serbia – 30 June 2025 (10/10)
