Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon the Porta Palio Luxury Apartment kind of by accident last summer when I was in Verona chasing that romantic vibe the city always promises – and honestly, it turned out to be one of those hidden gems that makes you feel like you’ve got the inside scoop. Tucked away at 11 Stradone Porta Palio, right in the historical center, it’s literally steps from that old city gate, Porta Palio, which most tourists breeze past without a second glance. I mean, I arrived in the late afternoon heat, dragging my suitcase over those uneven cobblestones – a bit of a workout, if I’m being real – but the moment I stepped inside, it was like exhaling after holding your breath. The place is set up as a proper luxury apartment, not some sterile hotel room, with high ceilings and these big windows that let in that golden Italian sunlight. I remember plopping down on the plush sofa, smelling the faint lavender from the fresh linens, and thinking, “Okay, this is how you do Verona right.” It’s got a full kitchen – we’re talking a sleek espresso machine and enough counter space to whip up a quick pasta if you’re not in the mood for the crowds at those touristy spots on Via Mazzini. And parking? Well, it’s a historical area, so spots are scarce; I ended up using a nearby garage off Corso Porta Nuova, which wasn’t too bad at about 20 euros a day, but plan ahead if you’re driving.

What really sets it apart, though – and this is coming from someone who’s stayed in a dozen places around here – is how it balances that old-world charm with modern perks without feeling over-the-top. The bedroom was spacious, with a king bed that swallowed me up after a day wandering to Castelvecchio (it’s like a 10-minute stroll along the Adige River, by the way, and totally worth it for the sunset views). There’s air conditioning that actually works quietly, which is a godsend in July when Verona gets sticky, and the bathroom had these rain showerheads that made mornings feel indulgent. I did notice the WiFi dipped a bit in the evenings – probably from all the neighbors streaming whatever – but it wasn’t a dealbreaker; I just used my phone’s hotspot for work emails. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly peaceful at night; you might hear the occasional scooter buzzing down Stradone in the morning, but nothing that kept me up. Oh, and check-in was a breeze – the host met me right on time, handed over the keys with a few local tips, like hitting the market at Piazza delle Erbe early to avoid the tour groups. It’s rated 9.1 for a reason, you know? Feels more like borrowing a friend’s swanky pad than a standard four-star stay.

All in all, if you’re heading to Verona – especially in the shoulder seasons like spring when the wisteria blooms everywhere and it’s not swarming with festival crowds – this spot’s a smart pick. It’s perfect for couples wanting that intimate feel or even small families who need space to spread out without the hotel hustle. You’ll save on eating out thanks to the kitchen, and being so central means you’re immersed in the action: Juliet’s balcony is a quick walk, and you can catch an opera at the Arena without rushing. Sure, it’s not the cheapest, but for the authenticity and that “I live here” illusion, it’s worth every euro. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a little secret – and isn’t that what travel’s all about?

Reviews

  • Daciana from Romania – 22 August 2023 (10/10)

the place and location are perfect. The host is great.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Terry from Canada – 15 March 2025 (9/10)

We liked the apartment, modern, clean , comfortable bed ,nice linens. We rated the shower as the best one in Italy of the places we stayed ( nice water pressure and hot ) ! Our host was responsive and met us at the apartment to check our documents ( and explain the extensive sign in and collect a damage deposit ) . The location was good , we walked from the train and we were able to walk all the sights. A secure place and has an elevator as well ( no lugging luggage up stairs ) . Loved the two bathrooms. Nice windows and glass doors . Recommend and would return .

What could be improved: The check in was extensive. I did not like that we had to give a damage deposit that is not returned to us for 7 to 14 days ( still waiting for that even though we left the place perfect . They assure us we will get it back ). I found this odd since no one did a check of the apartment before with us present and no one came to inspect it with us when we left ) . We have given damage deposits at hotels before, however, it has always been returned at day of checkout .
Some blinds on the living room and kitchen windows would be nice for privacy. Some olive oil for the kitchen is always nice .

  • Elisa from United States – 11 September 2024 (9/10)

good location, clean and comfortable rooms.

What could be improved: I think it is not acceptable to force customers to throw the garbage at the end of the stay. The cans were almost a block away.

  • Frank from United States – 9 August 2024 (8/10)

The space, location, access to local public transportation, access to coffee shops, stores, and tourist sights.

What could be improved: The air conditioning was not working correctly. The staff tried to fix it but it never cooled off as advertised. We slept without bed covers the whole stay.

  • Benny from Israel – 14 May 2024 (9/10)

Modern and very well appointed and equipped apt.
Grohe faucets Viliroy Bosch sanitary appliances.
    Bedrooms facing the back.
Close to the train station and the historic center

What could be improved: The main issue was with the waiting time for checkin. I waited 3 quarters of an hour.
Half an hour outside in the busy street and 15 minutes more in the stairs after someone went outside the building.
When the girl Chiara came she was very nice and later during my stay assisted in a very responsive way.
I also didn’t like their rigorous checking process.
The apt was on the first floor on a very busy street so when you open the windows for some air it is very noisy.
Still the insulation is superb and once you close the windows you hear nothing.

  • Lucy from United Kingdom – 14 May 2024 (10/10)

    Absolutely everything 😃
Perfect location, easy to find, friendly and helpful Francesca, super clean, very comfortable beds,no issues whatsoever.

What could be improved: No negative comments at all!

  • Jane from United Kingdom – 7 September 2023 (9/10)

    Great central location

What could be improved: All brilliant
A magnifying mirror in the bathroom might have been a good addition

  • David from United Kingdom – 30 August 2023 (9/10)

Clean apartment in a great location. 2 bathrooms always useful. Nice size living/kitchen area and good comfortable beds. Plenty of local bars and restaurants within a few hundred yards and only a short walk to Piazza Bra.

What could be improved: A few more coffees in the kitchen and maybe some recommendations of places to eat and drink in the welcome pack would have been useful.

  • Ekaterina from Russia – 9 July 2023 (10/10)

A bright and comfortable apartment in the center of Verona, very modern and clean. Ideal for 3 people. We would like to come back. Everything was just perfect.

  • Scott from United States – 3 July 2023 (10/10)

We were not sure if the apartment would live up to the pictures that were posted. It was everything we had hoped for…..clean, fresh, and great location. Perfect for 3 people. While located on a busy street, the windows were completely soundproof and had black-out shutters. The host, Matteo, was indispensible in recommending shops and restaurants…..and calling for a taxi on our departure. He is a "Super" host.

What could be improved: Since we were in the middle of our trip to Italy when we arrived in Verona, having a washing machine in the apartment was fabulous. We weren't quite sure how the clothes were supposed to dry? Maybe a drying rack of two would have been helpful. We probably didn't read the property description thoroughly enough to realize that the ensuite bathroom was in the smaller bedroom. Not a problem for us, but might be for someone else.
