Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Punto in Alto almost by accident last summer, when I was wandering through Verona’s tangled web of backstreets after a long day at the Arena – you know, that massive Roman amphitheater where they do those opera shows that can get pretty packed in July. Honestly, I’d been dodging tourists around Piazza delle Erbe all afternoon, and turning down Vicolo Colombine felt like slipping into a quieter, more locals-only corner of the city. It’s this narrow little alley off Via Sottoriva, right by the Adige River, where the air smells faintly of fresh bread from that bakery on the corner and the occasional whiff of the water when the breeze picks up. The hotel itself is tucked into an old building – nothing flashy, just a simple 3-star spot with a buzzer at the door that the owner, this friendly guy named Marco, answers with a quick “Buongiorno!” even if it’s late afternoon. Check-in was a breeze; he handed over the keys with a map scribbled with his favorite gelato spot nearby (try the pistachio at Gelateria Ponte Pietra, it’s worth the five-minute walk across the bridge).

What really won me over, though, was how the place feels like a hidden gem in the heart of it all – I mean, you’re steps from the Teatro Romano ruins, where you can catch sunset views over the river that are straight out of a postcard, but without the constant buzz of tour groups. My room was on the top floor (hence the name “Punto in Alto,” which basically means “high point”), with these creaky wooden beams overhead and a tiny balcony overlooking the rooftops – perfect for sipping an Aperol spritz as the church bells from Santa Anastasia chime in the distance. It’s not huge, mind you; the bathroom’s compact, like a lot of these historic conversions, and the Wi-Fi can be spotty if everyone’s online at once, but that’s Verona for you – old charm over modern bells and whistles. Breakfast is simple but solid: fresh croissants, cappuccino made just right, and those little jars of Nutella that make you feel like a kid again. Oh, and parking? Forget it if you’re driving; the streets are pedestrian-only, so I left my car at the public lot near Porta Vescovo and walked the 10 minutes – easy enough, unless you’ve got heavy bags after a train from Milan.

All in all, if you’re the type who wants to dive into Verona’s romantic side without the crowds – think quiet evenings strolling to Juliet’s House or grabbing pasta at that family-run trattoria on Via Pellicciai – this place is a solid pick. It’s got that authentic, lived-in vibe that makes you feel like you’re crashing at a friend’s apartment rather than a generic hotel. Sure, it might not be for light sleepers during festival season when the streets liven up, but with a 9 rating floating around, it’s clear others agree it’s worth it. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the off-season fall when the leaves turn and the whole city quiets down.

Reviews

  • Great room, attentive host with recommendations for guests. Was just what we were looking for. – Jessica from United Kingdom – 8 June 2025 (9/10)

The property was as described, great value, clean and had all utensils you could need, plenty of toilet roll soap and shower gel, an ironing board and iron, even a travel adaptor for the plugs.

What could be improved: Nothing specific, like most properties has to buy oil for cooking so small touches like that would have been good but definitely not necessary for a nice stay still. Stairs leading up-to property would need to be considered by other guests with mobility issues or large bags, but there is a stair lift so would ask host about using before booking.

  • Exceptional – Ejupi from Kosovo – 19 May 2025 (10/10)

I had a fantastic stay! The host was incredibly helpful and responsive, making the whole experience smooth and welcoming. The location was amazing—close to everything I needed and perfect for exploring the area. The apartment itself was spotless and fully equipped with everything I could possibly need—and more. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

    What could be improved: None.

  • Exceptional – Peter from United Kingdom – 26 December 2024 (10/10)

Everything was great , close walk to the centre
Apartment very spacious and warm when I came back in the evening

  • Superb – Vasiliki from Greece – 14 November 2024 (9/10)

Very nice flat, recently renovated with a minimal touch. The location was convenient as it was just 10minutes away by foot from the historic center which means it is located in a non-touristic area with nice bars/shops around. The host was very friendly and provided all information regarding check in on time. Highly recommended.

  • Exceptional – Marcin from Poland – 24 September 2024 (10/10)

Clean flat, good location, nearby market, close to train station and main city attractions, super helpful owner!

  • Comfortable apartment with a great location – Eceyerebasmaz from Turkey – 13 September 2024 (9/10)

I was very surprised with how easy it is to access the apartment. It is also a short walk from the city center. We attended the Verona Opera Festival, so location was very improtant for us as we had to walk to the apartment after the event. There is a beautiful balcony on the property, and it was very enjoyable to drink our morning coffee in the balcony.

What could be improved: There isn't wifi in the apartment. However, who needs internet when Verona is a beauty on it's own.

  • Exceptional – Ilektrafot from United Kingdom – 7 July 2024 (10/10)

We stayed 2 nights in Verona at Punto in alto department and we were very happy with everything. The host has been very accessible when we needed her and for she even let us do the check out a bit later as the weather was not good and was raining. If you go to Verona I highly recommend to stay at this apartment as it's not far away from the center and the area is quiet.

What could be improved: Everything was very good and the apartment was perfect and clean. Only thing to flag is that it doesn't have elevator so if you have a suitcase be mindful that it's not in the ground floor and will be a couple of steps.

  • great flat, responsive owner – Iztok from Slovenia – 18 May 2024 (10/10)

Excellent flat with plenty of space and storage. Everything one needs – fridge, kettle, iron etc. The owner was very responsive, and even provided a wifi unit even though that was not included.

What could be improved: Not a problem for many but there is no proper working desk and a working chair.

  • Better than in pictures – Ieva from Latvia – 9 September 2023 (10/10)

Flat was bright and wide, nice balcony, kitchen was well equipped, air conditioning, hair dryer etc. It’s clear that the owner has put an effort to many details to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

  • Exceptional – Valeriia from Ukraine – 25 July 2023 (10/10)

Very clean and cozy apartment with walking distance to the city center. Nice and friendly staff, easy check-in.

What could be improved: Kitchen towel would be really handy.
Fridge was small and licking from the freezer, leaving not much space for food storage.
