Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Residenza Callas II almost by accident last summer – well, not really by accident, since I’d booked it after a friend raved about staying smack in Verona’s historical center without feeling like a total tourist trap. It’s tucked away on Via Leoncino, this quiet little side street just off the bustling Via Mazzini, where all the high-end shops spill out toward Piazza delle Erbe. Honestly, arriving by foot from the Porta Nuova station (about a 15-minute walk if you’re not dragging a massive suitcase like I was) felt like stepping back in time – the cobblestones underfoot, that faint scent of espresso from the corner cafes, and the occasional chime of bells from the nearby Duomo. Parking? Forget it if you’re driving; the historical center’s a nightmare for cars, but there’s a public garage on Via della Costa that’s not too far, though it fills up quick during opera season in July and August.

What really won me over was how the place blends that old-world Verona charm with just enough modern perks to make you feel pampered – it’s a 4-star spot with a solid 9.1 rating for a reason, you know? The building itself is one of those renovated palazzos, with high ceilings and these chunky wooden beams that give the rooms a cozy, almost rustic vibe (though fair warning, some suites are on the smaller side, typical for these historical digs – I had to maneuver my bags around a bit). My room overlooked a tiny courtyard, and mornings started with sunlight filtering through lace curtains and the distant hum of market vendors setting up. Breakfast was a highlight – nothing fancy, but fresh croissants, local cheeses, and cappuccinos that hit the spot, served in a sunny atrium that smells like blooming jasmine in spring. The staff? Super friendly, like this one guy at check-in who chatted about the best gelato spot on Via Cappello (it’s Gelateria Savoia, by the way – try the pistachio). Oh, and noise levels are surprisingly low at night, even with the Arena di Verona just a five-minute stroll away; I slept like a baby after catching a show, though earplugs might help if you’re sensitive to the occasional late-night revelers.

All in all, if you’re heading to Verona for the romance – I mean, Juliet’s balcony is literally around the corner on Via Cappello, and you can wander to the Ponte Pietra for sunset views over the Adige River without breaking a sweat – this place makes it easy to dive right in. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms, and peak season means booking early to snag a balcony spot. But honestly, for the price and that authentic feel of living like a local in the heart of it all, I’d go back in a heartbeat. You sort of forget you’re in a hotel and just soak up the city – that’s the magic of it.

  • Perfect location – Delia from Moldova – 6 March 2024 (9/10)

Location was perfect, very close to all the main attractions, to good restaurants, coffee shops and stores, on a pretty quiet street.
The apartment looks just like in the pictures, very big, comfortable and clean.
Cristina was very helpful with everything we asked.

What could be improved: The bathroom with shower was attached to the main bedroom, the bath on the hallway was only a half bath. It can be a bit annoying for all the guests to pass through the bedroom to get to the shower.
