Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Residenza Ca’Salgari almost by accident last summer – well, not really by accident, since I’d booked it online, but you know what I mean. Tucked away in this tiny alley called Vicoletto Cieco Pozzo San Marco, right in Verona’s historical center, it’s one of those spots that feels like a secret even though it’s smack in the middle of everything. I arrived after a train from Milan, dragging my suitcase over the cobblestones from the Porta Nuova station – about a 20-minute walk if you’re not stopping for gelato along the way. Honestly, parking here is a nightmare if you’re driving; the historic district means no cars allowed in most spots, so I ditched mine at the underground lot near the Arena and hoofed it. But once you turn into that narrow lane, it’s like stepping back in time – old stone walls with creeping ivy, the faint echo of church bells from nearby San Zeno (that’s the basilica with those amazing bronze doors, by the way), and not a tourist trap in sight. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this friendly guy named Marco, greeted me with a espresso and chatted about the best spots for aperitivo on Via Mazzini, just a five-minute stroll away. No big lobby fuss – it’s more like arriving at a chic aunt’s townhouse.

What really won me over, though, was how they’ve turned this old building into something cozy yet polished – think exposed wooden beams in the rooms, crisp white linens that smell faintly of lavender (they must use some local detergent), and bathrooms with those rain showers that make you linger a bit too long. My suite overlooked a quiet courtyard, so mornings started with birds chirping instead of the usual city honks; Verona can get noisy during the opera season at the Arena in July and August, but this place is buffered enough that you sleep like a baby. Breakfast is served in a little sunlit room – fresh croissants, prosciutto from the market, and yogurt with honey that tastes like it came straight from the Veneto hills. I mean, it’s not a massive spread, but it’s thoughtful, and they cater to gluten-free without batting an eye. Exploring from here is effortless: You’re two blocks from Juliet’s balcony (touristy, sure, but fun for a quick photo), and a short wander to Piazza delle Erbe for the evening passeggiata – that’s when locals flood the square with their dogs and chatter, and you can grab a spritz at one of those hidden bars off Corso Porta Borsari. Oh, and if you’re into history, the Roman bridge over the Adige is practically your backyard; I crossed it every day for runs along the river path, dodging cyclists in that fresh morning mist.

Look, it’s not perfect – the stairs can be a bit steep if you’ve got heavy bags (no elevator in these historic conversions), and Wi-Fi dips in the afternoons when everyone’s streaming. But with a 9.4 rating, it’s earned it; this isn’t some cookie-cutter chain, it’s authentic Verona living. If you’re visiting for the romance or the culture – maybe catching a show at the Arena or just wandering the medieval streets – Residenza Ca’Salgari feels like home base. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season in spring when the crowds thin out and the air smells like blooming wisteria. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that makes you linger over that last coffee before checkout.

Reviews

  • excellent, centrally located, wonderful apartment with very helpful hosts – Francesca from United Kingdom – 28 May 2025 (10/10)

Max and his partner were extrmely kind and helpful, from handing over the keys, to answering any questions I had about the apartment.
The apartment is wonderful – centrally located (so can get a little noisy – but this was not a problem for me as the noise level was not disruptive) – fully fitted kitchen, excellent views, really comfortable bed!

What could be improved: Nothing -all was great!

  • Exceptional – John from Canada – 28 April 2025 (10/10)

We had a wonderful stay in this cozy and bright apartment with an amazing view. It had all amenities and welcoming feel. Apartment is very well located and staff is amazing. A special thanks to Julia!

  • I loved it and would absolutely stay here again. – Anne-marie from United States – 26 April 2025 (10/10)

The view and location of this property are both stunning. It’s right in the old section of town yet still manages to be peaceful. It’s an amazing refuge to return to after taking in the sights of Verona and so lovely it’s tempting to stay inside!

What could be improved: If you have trouble with stairs this would not be a good choice but for me it was not a problem.

  • Very good – Veronique from Canada – 19 April 2024 (8/10)

Location was great. Value is fantastic. Communication was also very good.

What could be improved: Needed a second key. It was provided after the second day but that should have been an option immediately.

– Donatella from Switzerland – 31 May 2025 (10/10)

Emplacement parfait!

  • Exceptional – Philippe from France – 2 January 2025 (10/10)

  • Un regalo perfetto – Mariagiovanna from Italy – 30 September 2024 (10/10)

– Capitano from Brazil – 12 January 2024 (10/10)

What could be improved: Talvez um cuidado maior com a limpeza fina, mas que não comprometeu a estadia em nada.

  • Very good – Vladislav from Israel – 3 May 2023 (8/10)

  • Superb – David from France – 2 June 2025 (9/10)
