Residenza Portoni Borsari Overview
You know what really struck me when I first walked into Residenza Portoni Borsari? It’s one of those places that immediately makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something the guidebooks haven’t ruined yet. I mean, the location alone – you’re literally steps away from the ancient Roman gate that gives the hotel its name, and honestly, waking up to that view never gets old.
The thing about staying here is that you’re right in the thick of Verona’s historic center, but somehow it doesn’t feel touristy in that overwhelming way some places do. I’ve stayed here twice now (once in spring, once during the summer opera season), and what I love is how the staff actually remembers you – not in a fancy five-star hotel way, but more like friendly locals who genuinely want to help. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully comfortable rather than flashy. Sure, it’s a three-star property, but they’ve clearly put effort into the details that actually matter – good Wi-Fi, surprisingly quiet despite being on a busy street, and beds that don’t leave you feeling like you wrestled with them all night.
What really sold me on this place, though, is how perfectly positioned you are for exploring the city on foot. Via Portoni Borsari runs right into Corso Porta Borsari, and within five minutes you can be at Piazza delle Erbe sipping an aperitivo or wandering toward Juliet’s balcony if you’re feeling touristy. But here’s the insider bit – walk the other direction toward Castelvecchio and you’ll find some incredible little wine bars that locals actually frequent. The area gets lively in the evenings (Verona knows how to do aperitivo hour properly), but the hotel’s windows are decent enough that street noise isn’t really an issue. I was a bit worried about that the first time, but honestly, by 11 PM things quiet down considerably. During opera season it’s a different story – expect more energy in the streets, but that’s part of the fun. The 8.4 rating makes perfect sense to me; it’s not trying to be something it isn’t, but what it does, it does really well. If you want marble lobbies and concierge services, look elsewhere, but if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere authentic with genuine character, this is your spot.
Travelers should reserve a hotel in Verona at least two months ahead for major events like opera performances and wine festivals, ensuring the best rates and prime locations near popular romantic sites.

The location of the apartment was just perfectly located, especially because we only had one day to visit the city. In the city center close to all highlights, but there really wasn't that much noise, I have slept well! The host was very nice and came to welcome us with the keys. The apartment is spacious and cutely decorated.
What could be improved: The pillows on the bed were quiet hard, I have gotten a bit of a neckpain because of them. And the downside of staying in the city center is you need to park your car out of the center and walk quiet far. The host does help you with that and arranges you can drive into town to unload your car in front of the building, she makes it as comfortable as possible.Kristina from Germany – 18 August 2024 (9/10)

Perfect location, in easy walking distance to most sights in Verona.
What could be improved: The apartment was extremely hot in August. Air-conditioning needed to run all night, even though I never use air-conditioning as a rule.Miriam from Italy – 6 August 2024 (9/10)
