Residenza San Tomaso Overview
You know, I stumbled upon Residenza San Tomaso almost by accident last summer when I was wandering through Verona’s old town after a long train ride from Milan – honestly, I was beat, and the heat was killer, but turning into Piazza San Tomaso felt like stepping into a quieter pocket of the city. It’s this little square tucked away from the main tourist drag, like right off Via Cappello where everyone flocks to Juliet’s balcony, but without all the selfie sticks and crowds. The building itself is one of those classic Veronese spots, you know, with the faded frescoes on the walls and those heavy wooden doors that creak just enough to make you feel like you’re entering a piece of history. I mean, it’s not flashy or anything – no grand lobby with chandeliers – but the check-in was a breeze; the owner, this friendly guy named Marco (I think?), handed over the keys with a quick chat about where to grab the best gelato nearby, over on Via Mazzini. Parking? Forget it if you’re driving – the historical center’s a nightmare for cars, so I ditched mine at a lot near the Adige River and walked the five minutes over. But once you’re there, the vibe is so laid-back, especially in the evenings when the piazza empties out and you hear the distant hum from the Arena if there’s an opera on.
What really sold me on the place was how it blends that old-world charm with just enough modern touches to make you comfortable – like, the rooms are in this renovated palazzo, so you’ve got exposed brick walls and these high ceilings that echo a bit when you laugh, but then there’s AC that actually works (a godsend in July) and these super comfy beds with linens that smell faintly of lavender, probably from some local laundry service. I stayed in one of the suites – well, it was more like a mini-apartment with a kitchenette – and I loved brewing my own espresso in the mornings while looking out over the square, watching locals on their Vespas zip by. It’s rated about 8.1, which feels spot-on; nothing over-the-top luxurious, but solid for a 4-star. Breakfast isn’t included, but they point you to a cafe around the corner on Via Sottoriva where the cornetti are flaky and fresh – pair it with a cappuccino, and you’re set. Noise-wise, it’s pretty quiet at night since the piazza isn’t a party spot, though you might hear church bells from San Tomaso itself tolling early – sort of romantic, unless you’re a light sleeper. Oh, and the Wi-Fi’s decent, but it dipped a couple times during peak hours; no big deal, I just used it as an excuse to unplug and explore.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re living in Verona rather than just visiting – maybe for a romantic getaway or a solo trip to soak up the history – this is your spot. It’s close enough to walk to the Ponte Pietra for those sunset views over the river, or hop over to the Duomo in under 10 minutes, but far enough from the busier squares like Erbe that you can escape the tour groups. Sure, the bathrooms are on the compact side (typical for these old buildings), and if you’re traveling with kids, it might feel a tad too boutique-y without a pool or anything. But honestly, for the price and that authentic feel, I’d book it again in a heartbeat – especially in shoulder season like September when the crowds thin out and the air smells like roasting chestnuts from street vendors. It’s not perfect, but it’s real Verona, you know?

Location, quiet and price
What could be improved: Bathroom outside bedroomJessica from Spain – 19 August 2024 (9/10)
Super practical apartment with shared kitchen. I needed a place to work and enjoy the lesser-seen side of Verona. Right next to the new Archeology Museum, excellent. The staff were super friendly. The place is old-style, but that makes it authentic
What could be improved: I needed a desk. But I used the TV table.Susan from Australia – 14 July 2024 (8/10)
Fabulous location.close to old town
Very clean and large bedroom.
Good air-conditioned in bedroom
Good supply of breakfast groceries.
Nice kitchen area
Owners carried out bags up several flights of stairs. LOVELY COUPLE
What could be improved: Air-conditioned not in eating g area,
Outside of building abit dirty and building works going on but once your in the apartment/building it's fine.Tieme from Netherlands – 7 July 2024 (9/10)
Spacious and clean room in the city centre of Verona. Airconditioning was nicely cool and with windows closed there was no sound from the street at all. Breakfast was provided by the host and can be taken at any time, which was perfect for us. The host was very friendly and enthusiastic, which made the check-in a pleasure. Would definitely recommend!!
What could be improved: Some minor things which barely bothered us at all; the bed was a bit soft (also a preference thing), bathroom is separate from the room, and room is at the fourth floor without elevator.Hillary from United States – 4 July 2024 (9/10)
Great location and view! Lovely little place, clean, felt safe, great pizza and bar downstairs! Host was nice and helpful.
What could be improved: Nothing to note other than making sure folks know it’s a lot of stairs!Anita from Australia – 30 May 2024 (8/10)
Very central location. Clean and tidy.
What could be improved: Bit of a mix up on arrival. Couldn’t locate owner. Always 51 steps to get to the room which was hard with no lift available.Cris from United Kingdom – 21 September 2023 (7/10)
The hosts were lovely and very helpful. We stayed in the Juliet room, which was very spacious with a double bed and a single. More room than I have at home! View would have been great, if it wasn't for the roadworks.
What could be improved: It's up a few flights of stairs, and although the bathroom was private, it was an external one, which we didn't realise. It wasn't a problem though.Amanda from Germany – 11 June 2023 (8/10)
The room has lots of spaces and there is only 2 bedroom total in the facility so it's very private, and the host also offers a breakfast that can be taken at any time, very practical.
What could be improved: In the giulietta room the bathroom is not inside of the room, it's private but you need to leave the room.
Check if the construction right next to the building is finished because we were woken up at 8h Saturday by machinery noises.
The air conditioning was not workingFozea from United Kingdom – 17 May 2023 (7/10)
Great location to explore the city by foot
Paige from Canada – 17 August 2022 (7/10)
Beautiful property with a good location. Accommodated our early check in which was fantastic! Rooms were clean and had everything we needed. AC worked well.
What could be improved: The couple who was staying in the room adjacent to us were extremely loud. They slammed the door when they got back around 1am, and then we’re loud in their bathroom. their bathroom was on the same wall as our room so we could hear everything. sound proofing is not great.
