Residenze Giulietta Capuleti 1 Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Residenze Giulietta Capuleti 1? The name makes it sound like some touristy Romeo and Juliet themed place, but it’s actually way more authentic than that suggests. I mean, sure, you’re definitely in Shakespeare territory here in Verona, but this 3-star spot has this lived-in Italian charm that feels genuinely local rather than put-on for visitors.

The building itself has that weathered stone character you see all over the historic center – thick walls that actually keep things cool in summer and surprisingly quiet at night, which honestly surprised me given how close you are to the main pedestrian areas. I stayed here during peak tourist season and barely heard the crowds that I knew were just a few blocks away. The rooms have this slightly worn elegance that I’ve come to associate with family-run Italian places – not pristine like a chain hotel, but comfortable in that way where you can tell people actually live and work here year-round. The floors creak a bit when you walk around, and there’s this faint smell of old wood and maybe someone’s grandmother’s cooking drifting up from somewhere below.

What really sold me on the place was how the staff treated me like I was staying at their cousin’s apartment rather than checking into a hotel. The woman at reception (I think she might actually own the place) gave me these incredibly specific directions to restaurants that weren’t in any guidebook I’d seen – places where locals actually eat instead of the tourist traps near the Arena. She also warned me about which streets get completely packed during the evening passeggiata, which saved me from getting stuck in those slow-moving crowds when I was trying to get back after dinner. The 8.8 rating it has makes total sense to me because while it’s not fancy, everything just… works. The shower has good water pressure, the bed is comfortable enough that I actually slept well, and there’s decent WiFi throughout. Plus, you’re close enough to walk everywhere that matters – the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, even Juliet’s balcony if you’re into that sort of thing – but far enough from the main squares that you’re not dealing with street noise until late at night. It’s one of those places where you end up feeling like you discovered something rather than just booked a room, if that makes sense.
