Hotel Description

I remember pulling into Verona by train last summer, stepping off at Porta Nuova station with my backpack feeling heavier than it should after that long ride from Milan. Honestly, the Sole Hotel Verona was a godsend right then – it’s literally across the street from the station on Piazzale XXV Aprile, so no dragging luggage through crowded sidewalks or fumbling with taxis. I mean, if you’re like me and hate that post-travel haze, this spot cuts it right out. The entrance is unassuming, tucked into a modern-ish building that blends with the area’s mix of old warehouses and new apartments – you know, that gritty edge of Verona before you hit the fairy-tale historic center. Check-in was a breeze; the front desk guy, Marco (I think that was his name), chatted about the best gelato spots while handing over my key, and he even tipped me off that parking’s a steal in their underground garage if you’re driving – rare in a city where spots vanish like magic during festival season.

Stepping into my room on the third floor, it felt like a cozy escape from the outside bustle. The place is a solid 3-star, nothing flashy, but they’ve got the basics nailed with clean lines, a comfy bed that didn’t creak (thank goodness after some nightmare stays elsewhere), and a bathroom that actually had decent water pressure – you know what I mean if you’ve dealt with Italy’s finicky plumbing. There’s this faint scent of fresh linen mixed with whatever they’re brewing in the breakfast room downstairs, which wafts up in the mornings. Breakfast, by the way, is a highlight: think fresh croissants, local cheeses, and espresso that packs a punch, served in a bright space overlooking the piazza. It’s not gourmet or anything, but it sets you up nicely for wandering. Oh, and a minor gripe – the street noise from trains and traffic can seep in if your window faces the front, especially around rush hour; I ended up closing mine at night, but earplugs would’ve fixed it. Still, the air conditioning hummed quietly, and the free Wi-Fi was reliable enough for streaming a quick episode before bed. They even have these little balconies on some rooms – mine overlooked a quiet courtyard with olive trees, which felt authentically Veronese, sort of like a mini oasis amid the urban hum.

What really sold me on Sole Hotel Verona, though, is how it positions you for the best of the city without breaking the bank. You’re a 20-minute stroll from the Arena di Verona – that ancient amphitheater where they do opera in the summer, and let me tell you, catching a show there under the stars is pure magic, especially if you time it for July or August (just book tickets early, as it gets packed). Or hop a bus right outside to Juliet’s House in five minutes flat; it’s touristy, sure, but rubbing that statue for luck is a rite of passage. Well, for a place rated 8.4, it punches above its weight – great for solo travelers or couples who want practicality over luxury. I left feeling like I’d found a hidden gem in a city that can feel overwhelming; if you’re plotting a Verona trip, this one’s worth it for the no-fuss vibe and those insider chats with staff that make you feel like a local. Just pack light and embrace the energy – it’s Italy, after all.

It was perfect for the train station. We were only staying one night and getting an early train so it was good to be so close but the area around the entrance was a bit rough

What could be improved: With the hotel being so close to the station the area around the entrance was a bit rough – lots of groups of young lads sat around. I wouldn’t have liked to be going back to my room at night
