Verona Porta Borsari Relais Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Verona Porta Borsari Relais, I almost missed it entirely. It’s tucked away in this incredibly charming spot right near the ancient Roman gate (you know, the actual Porta Borsari that gives the hotel its name), and from the outside it looks more like a elegant private residence than a hotel. Which, honestly, is exactly what makes it so special.

The location is just… well, it’s perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Verona rather than just visiting it. You’re literally steps away from the Roman gate – I mean, you can see it from some of the rooms – but you’re also just a quick stroll to Piazza delle Erbe when you want that classic Verona buzz. What I love is that you’re close enough to everything important, but the street itself stays relatively quiet, especially in the evenings. I actually enjoyed my morning espresso on their little terrace, watching locals head to work while tourists were still figuring out their maps. The building itself has this wonderful old-world feel – you can tell they’ve put serious thought into preserving the historical character while making sure everything actually works properly (the Wi-Fi is solid, the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a tractor, that sort of thing).

The rooms have this elegant, understated vibe that feels authentically Italian rather than trying too hard to be fancy. My room had these beautiful high ceilings and original architectural details, but the bathroom was completely modern – which, let’s face it, is exactly what you want after a day of walking around cobblestone streets. The staff genuinely seems to care about making sure you have a good experience, not in that over-the-top way that feels fake, but more like they’re proud of their city and want you to love it too. They gave me some great recommendations for restaurants that weren’t just the obvious touristy spots. One thing to note – parking can be a bit tricky in this area (it’s the historic center, after all), but they’ll help you figure out the best options nearby. With a 9.1 rating, you know other people have had similarly good experiences, and honestly, I can see why. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special, even though it’s clearly well-run and professional. If you want to stay somewhere that feels like the real Verona – historic, elegant, but comfortable – this is definitely worth considering.
