Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to Villa Angelina on Via Barana in Borgo Venezia – you know, that quieter eastern slice of Verona where the locals actually live, away from the tourist crush around the Arena or Juliet’s balcony. It’s not smack in the historic center, but honestly, that’s part of the charm; you’re about a 20-minute walk or a quick bus ride (the number 11 stops right nearby on Via XX Settembre) to the main sights, which means you can dip into the chaos for an afternoon gelato at Piazza delle Erbe and then escape back to something more real. I drove in from the A4 highway – easy enough, though parking can be a bit of a hunt on the narrow streets here; they have a small lot out back, but it fills up fast in summer when everyone’s flocking to the opera festival. The villa itself looks like one of those old Italian homes converted into a hotel, with ivy creeping up the stone walls and a little garden that smells faintly of rosemary in the mornings. Check-in was a breeze – the owner, this friendly guy named Marco (I think), chatted with me about the best nearby pizzeria (try Da Salvatore on Via Pisano, it’s unpretentious and does killer arancini) while handing over the keys. No fancy lobby, just a cozy reception with worn wooden floors that creak a little, which sort of adds to the homey vibe.

Stepping into my room, it felt more like staying at a relative’s place than a sterile hotel – think simple furnishings, a comfy bed with those crisp white linens that Italians do so well, and a balcony overlooking the neighborhood rooftops. It’s a 3-star spot, so don’t expect spa-level luxury; the bathroom was basic but spotless, with decent water pressure in the shower (a win after some of the duds I’ve encountered in Italy). Breakfast was included and surprisingly good – fresh croissants, cappuccino made right there, and some local cheeses – served in a sunny room that opens to the garden, where you can hear birds chirping over the distant hum of scooters. I mean, it’s not gourmet, but it sets you up nicely for a day exploring. One minor gripe: the walls are a tad thin, so if you’ve got noisy neighbors, you might hear snippets of conversation – nothing terrible, but earplugs could help during peak season. Oh, and the Wi-Fi was reliable enough for streaming, which was a relief after spotty connections elsewhere in Verona. What really stuck with me was wandering the Borgo Venezia streets in the evening; it’s got that authentic feel with family-run shops and kids playing soccer, far from the overpriced traps downtown. If you’re into cycling, there’s a rental spot just down the road on Via San Nazaro – I grabbed a bike and pedaled along the Adige River path, which is gorgeous at sunset.

All in all, Villa Angelina’s a solid pick if you’re after value without the frills – that 7.6 rating feels about right, reflecting its no-nonsense appeal for budget travelers or couples wanting a low-key base. It’s not for those craving five-star pampering, but if you appreciate dipping into real Verona life (think quiet mornings and easy access to spots like the Giardino Giusti gardens, a hidden gem nearby), you’ll love it. I left feeling like I’d gotten a genuine taste of the city, and honestly, I’d book it again in a heartbeat for my next trip – especially in shoulder season when the crowds thin out and the rates drop even lower.

What could be improved: A little bit far from main train station

  • If I go to Verona, I will stay there again. – Maria from Belarus – 8 November 2024 (9/10)

I liked everything – the location, the price, the design of the rooms and the furniture. Yes, this is the basement floor of a private house, so the windows are high and at ground level, it turns out -0.5 floor. But at the same time there is no feeling of inconvenience – the ceilings are high, the furniture and the windows to the garden create comfort. I liked the room for two more – it is lighter and larger. But a room for one when visiting Verona for a couple of days is also a great option. The shared kitchenette has a microwave, coffee machine, refrigerator. The hostess kindly provides coffee and sweets upon check-in. It is very nice. You can use the host's garden if the weather is good)
