I remember pulling up to Alatea Apartments Poloni on a balmy evening last spring – I’d just hopped off the train at Porta Nuova and decided to walk the 15 minutes or so through Verona’s winding streets, dodging a few Vespas along the way. Honestly, Via Luigia Poloni is one of those tucked-away spots in the historical center that feels like a locals’ secret; it’s just a stone’s throw from Castelvecchio and that gorgeous Ponte Scaligero bridge over the Adige River, where you can catch the sunset turning the water all golden. You know what, parking here’s a bit of a hassle if you’re driving – narrow streets and all – but there’s a public lot nearby on Via Roma that works if you get there early. The building itself has that classic Veronese charm, with its pale stone facade and wrought-iron balconies, and checking in was a breeze; the host met me right on time, handed over the keys with a quick rundown in broken English (which was fine, since my Italian’s rusty anyway), and even tossed in a tip about the best gelato spot down on Corso Porta Borsari.

Stepping inside my apartment – well, it’s more like a stylish flat than a stuffy hotel room, which is what sold me on this place. We’re talking high ceilings with exposed beams, a kitchenette stocked with basics (fresh espresso pods that smelled amazing first thing in the morning), and a bathroom that felt spa-like with its rain shower and those fluffy towels that don’t feel like sandpaper. I mean, it’s rated 9.5 for a reason – everything’s spotless, and the Wi-Fi’s actually reliable, not the spotty kind you get in some older buildings. Mornings were my favorite: I’d brew coffee and sit by the window, listening to the faint hum of the city waking up – church bells from nearby San Zeno, maybe, or the occasional bike whizzing by – without the chaos of the main tourist drags like Piazza delle Erbe. Oh, and if you’re traveling with a group or just need space, these apartments sleep up to four comfortably; mine had a pull-out sofa that was surprisingly comfy. One minor gripe? The stairs to the upper floors – no elevator, so pack light if you’re on level three – but hey, it keeps you active after all those pasta dinners at Trattoria al Pompiere, which is literally a five-minute stroll away.

All in all, if you’re after that authentic Verona vibe without feeling like you’re in a postcard trap, Alatea’s a gem. It’s quiet enough for a good night’s sleep, even during the busy opera season at the Arena (which is walkable, by the way – about 10 minutes), but close enough to dive into the action when you want. I stayed four nights and left wishing for more; it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve got your own little pied-à-terre in Juliet’s city. Sort of pricey in peak summer, but worth it for the location and that homey touch – trust me, you’ll thank yourself when you’re sipping wine on the balcony, watching the world go by.

  Loved this stay. We were pleasantly surprised at almost every aspect of this booking. It was a very last minute reservation and there was not a ton of places left in Verona so we weren't expecting much. However, this was one of our best stays in Italy. The hosts were exceedingly reachable and responsive. The apartment was an easy 6-8 minute walk to downtown Verona and the neighborhood felt very safe at night. The flat was beyond clean-you'd have to put in serious effort to find even a speck of dust in the place. The bed and pillows were comfy. I can't believe what a deal this was at only 85 euros. We walked to and from the train station with luggage (maybe 13-15 minute walk) and they have an excellent luggage storage locker system that we used on the day we checked out. Left our luggage at 10am when we checked out and grabbed it at 6 that night en route to the train station. Book this place with confidence.

  It's a lovely apartment in a great location near to the attractions and landmarks in the old town.

  We were there for less than 1 night and it was on the pricier side but no fault of the hosts. You can tell the hosts have put a lot of thought into the place, very simple yet modern, CLEAN, and absolutely love the way they’ve kept it. As per the pictures too. Cleanest apartment I’ve been in in a very long while (and I’ve been in A LOT of places). I will definitely be staying there again. Top notch.

  Everything. The place is great, very clena and cozy, 5 minutes walking from the Castlevecchio. The hosts were really amazing as well. They gave us plenty of tips on what to visit and where to eat and even allow us to checkinearlier.
