Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon ApartmentsArena – Residenza Dei Capitolari almost by accident during a sweltering July trip to Verona – you know, that time of year when the city buzzes with opera lovers flocking to the Arena for those open-air performances. Tucked away on Piazzetta Capretto, right in the historical centre, it’s this charming old building that feels like it’s been there forever, sandwiched between those narrow, winding streets like Via Cappello (yeah, the one leading straight to Juliet’s House, if you’re into that romantic stuff). I mean, you step out the door and you’re basically in the thick of it – a quick wander down to Piazza delle Erbe for the morning market, where the air’s thick with the scent of ripe peaches and espresso from the vendors. Honestly, it’s not one of those sterile hotels on the outskirts; this place lets you live like a local, dodging Vespas and hearing church bells chime from the nearby Duomo. Parking? Well, forget about it if you’re driving – the centre’s a pedestrian zone mostly, but there’s a handy garage just off Corso Porta Borsari that saved my bacon, though it costs a bit extra.
What really won me over, though, was how they’ve turned this historic residenza into these cozy apartments without losing that old-world vibe. My unit had these exposed wooden beams and terracotta floors that stayed blissfully cool even in the heatwave – sort of like stepping into a Renaissance painting, but with a modern kitchenette where I whipped up pasta from ingredients grabbed at the market (pro tip: the salumeria on Via Mazzini has killer prosciutto). The bed was ridiculously comfortable, and there was this tiny balcony overlooking the piazza – perfect for sipping wine at dusk while watching families stroll by, though it can get a tad noisy on weekend evenings with the aperitivo crowd spilling out from bars like the one on the corner. Check-in was a breeze; the host, this friendly guy named Marco, handed over the keys with a map scribbled with his favorite gelato spot (avoid the touristy ones near the Arena, he said – head to Ponte Pietra instead for the real deal). No elevator, mind you, so if you’re hauling suitcases up those stone stairs, pack light or ask for help. But overall, it’s spotless, with that faint lavender scent from the linens that just makes you unwind instantly.
Look, if you’re heading to Verona and want more than just a bed – something that immerses you in the city’s heartbeat without the chain-hotel blandness – this is it. The 9.3 rating isn’t hype; it’s earned from folks like me who appreciated the authenticity, even with minor quirks like the occasional street noise (earplugs help during festival season). I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-peak in spring when the crowds thin out and you can snag a quieter stay. You know what? It made my trip feel less like tourism and more like borrowing a piece of Verona life – and that’s saying something in a city this magical.

Gian from Italy – 18 April 2024 (10/10)
