I stumbled across Casa Nicola dietro l’Arena on my third trip to Verona, and honestly, I wish I’d found it sooner. The name literally means “behind the Arena,” which tells you everything about its location – you’re tucked away just steps from the Roman amphitheater, but on one of those quieter side streets where locals actually live. The first time I walked up to the entrance, I almost missed it because it doesn’t scream “hotel” at you, which is actually part of its charm. It feels more like you’re staying at a particularly stylish Italian friend’s place.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to capture that authentic Veronese atmosphere without any of the tourist trap nonsense you find closer to the main piazzas. The rooms have this perfect balance of old-world character and modern comfort – I mean, you’ll find original stone details and beautiful wooden beams, but the Wi-Fi actually works and the shower has proper water pressure (trust me, that’s not always a given in historic Italian buildings). The 4-star rating feels spot-on because they’ve invested in the details that matter. My room had these gorgeous shutters that opened onto a tiny balcony, and in the mornings I could hear the vendors setting up in the nearby market rather than tour buses rumbling past.

The staff here actually know the neighborhood – not just the obvious tourist spots, but where to grab the best coffee before 8 AM or which osteria has the freshest horse meat dishes if you’re feeling adventurous. They pointed me toward this little enoteca around the corner that I never would have found otherwise. Location-wise, you’re maybe a three-minute walk to the Arena, but more importantly, you can easily explore the Cittadella area on foot or wander down toward the Adige River without dealing with crowds. Parking can be a bit tricky in this part of town, but they’ll sort you out with directions to nearby lots. The 9.2 rating doesn’t surprise me at all – it’s one of those places that just gets the fundamentals right while giving you a genuine taste of what it’s like to live in this corner of Verona, even if it’s just for a few nights.

  The location is fantastic- a step away from the Arena, but on a quiet street.
  The studio is in an old building but freshly renovated, so has a nice character.
  
  What could be improved: People with restricted mobility should be conscious that it takes several flights of stairs to get into the apartment.

  The apartment is very new and clean. It’s very close to the arena and most of the attractions are in walking distance. There is also a luggage storage not so far away. Nicola is very responsive and supportive during our stay.
