Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to Il Relais dell’Abbazia after a long drive from Lake Garda – you know, that twisty road along the hills that always feels longer than it should. It’s tucked away on this narrow little alley, Vicolo dietro Caserma Chiodo, right in Verona’s San Zeno district, which honestly feels like a step back in time compared to the bustling center around the Arena. I mean, San Zeno’s got that authentic Verona vibe without the hordes of tourists snapping selfies every five seconds – think quiet cobblestone streets lined with old stone houses and the occasional scooter zipping by. Parking was a bit of a hassle, as it often is in these historic parts; we ended up circling a couple times before spotting a spot near the old barracks (that’s what “Caserma Chiodo” refers to, apparently some 19th-century military building turned into who-knows-what now). But once we checked in – super smooth, by the way, with the owner greeting us like old friends and offering a glass of local Valpolicella right off the bat – it was like the stress melted away. The building itself is this charming converted abbey relic, all exposed brick and wooden beams that creak just enough to remind you it’s got history, not in a creepy way, but sort of welcoming, you know?
What really sold me on the place was how it balances that old-world feel with the comforts you actually need after a day wandering Verona. Our room overlooked a tiny courtyard – nothing fancy, but the morning light filtering through the vines and the faint smell of espresso from the breakfast setup downstairs was pure magic. Breakfast, oh man, it’s not your standard hotel buffet; they serve it in this cozy garden area (weather permitting, which it usually is in spring), with fresh pastries from a bakery just down Via San Zeno, and cheeses that taste like they came straight from a nearby farm. The beds are ridiculously comfortable – firm but not too much, with those crisp linens that make you want to sleep in – though I will say the rooms are on the smaller side, so if you’re traveling with a ton of luggage, pack light. Noise-wise, it’s blissfully quiet at night, except for the occasional church bell from the Basilica di San Zeno, which is literally a five-minute stroll away. We walked over there one evening, caught a free organ concert – total insider tip, by the way, they do those sporadically in the off-season. And getting to the city center? Easy peasy; hop on a bus from Piazza Corrubbio or just wander along the Adige River path, which takes you right to Ponte Pietra in about 15 minutes. It’s perfect if you want to escape the summer crowds – Verona gets packed in July and August, but San Zeno stays mellow.
Honestly, if you’re the type who wants more than just a bed in a boxy chain hotel, this place is a gem. That 9.5 rating? Totally earned – it’s got soul, from the personalized tips on hidden gelato spots (try the one on Via Barbarani, trust me) to the way they handle little things like lending umbrellas during those surprise April showers. Sure, it’s not the cheapest 4-star around, but for the intimacy and that feeling of actually living in Verona for a bit, it’s worth every euro. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in fall when the leaves turn and the air smells like roasting chestnuts from the street vendors nearby. If you’re planning a romantic getaway or just need a break from the tourist grind, book it – you won’t regret it.

The location of Il Relais dell'Abbazia was perfect for walking into Verona and there was also a good selection of more local restaurants nearby, after a day of sightseeing.
