Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Massimago Wine Suites last spring during one of those whirlwind trips to Verona – you know, when the cherry blossoms are just starting to pop and the air smells faintly of espresso and fresh bread from the bakeries nearby. I’d been wandering from the Arena di Verona, dodging the usual tourist crowds on Via Mazzini, and honestly, turning onto Via Stradone San Fermo felt like slipping into a quieter, more authentic slice of the city. The hotel’s tucked right there at number 24, in this charming historical building that blends right in with the old stone facades – no flashy signs screaming “hotel,” which I appreciated. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – this friendly local guy named Marco, I think – greeted me with a glass of Valpolicella right off the bat, chatting about how the place is actually part of a family-run winery estate outside town. It’s not huge, just a handful of suites, so it feels intimate, like you’re staying with friends who know their wine. Oh, and parking? Well, forget about it if you’re driving – those narrow centro storico streets are a nightmare for cars, but there’s a public garage just a five-minute walk away on Via Filippini that saved my sanity.
What really won me over were the suites themselves – mine was this cozy, high-ceilinged room with exposed brick walls and these massive windows overlooking a little courtyard where you could hear distant church bells chiming in the mornings (San Fermo Maggiore is literally around the corner, so yeah, expect some melodic wake-up calls). The wine theme isn’t gimmicky; it’s thoughtful – think bedside tastings with notes on local Amarone producers, and the minibar stocked with bottles from their own vineyards. The bed was ridiculously comfortable, all crisp linens and plush pillows, and the bathroom had this rain shower that felt like a spa after a day of traipsing around. I mean, Verona in peak season can be exhausting with the heat and the throngs at Juliet’s House (which is only a 10-minute stroll from here, by the way), but coming back to that cool, dimly lit space with the faint scent of aged wood and lavender from the toiletries was pure bliss. There was even a small terrace where I sipped prosecco at sunset, watching locals cycle by – though, fair warning, it can get a tad noisy in the evenings when folks spill out from the nearby osterias on Via Sottoriva.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants to dive into Verona’s soul without the cookie-cutter hotel vibe, Massimago is a gem. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi dipped a bit during my stay, sort of spotty in the quieter hours – but that 9.3 rating isn’t hype; it’s earned through those personal touches that make you feel connected to the place. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season in fall when the wine harvest buzz is in the air and the crowds thin out. Trust me, pair it with a walk to Piazza delle Erbe for morning market vibes, and you’ve got yourself an unforgettable Verona escape.

Situated a short walk from the Roman Coliseum and within walking distance of the entire old town, Massimago wine suites is perfectly positioned to explore the beautiful city of Verona. The room was large, comfortable and well equipped and excellent aircon (needed in 33° heat). The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast box, delivered to your room, was extensive (yoghurt, fruit, juice, croissant, meats, cheeses etc) . Could not recommend more highly.

Great location for a couple of nights in Verona. Minutes from the Arena. Nice large room. We ordered the breakfast one morning which was very good but huge – enough for four (but maybe our appetites are small)!
What could be improved: We were grateful for the air conditioning but it was a bit noisy and one of the windows didn’t have shutters and the curtains let in the morning light.David from United States – 29 June 2024 (9/10)
The hospitality was outstanding. Texted our host many times with questions and help needed. Always quick and great response. Loved the place!!
