Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Palazzo Monga Boutique Guesthouse almost by accident during a solo trip to Verona last spring – you know, that time of year when the city starts buzzing with tourists but hasn’t hit peak chaos yet. I’d been wandering down Corso Porta Borsari, this charming old street lined with those classic Italian boutiques and gelaterias that locals actually frequent, not just the tourist traps. The address is right there at number 36, tucked into the historical center, and honestly, pulling up in a taxi felt like stepping back in time. The building itself is this restored 18th-century palazzo with these grand stone arches and wrought-iron balconies – nothing flashy, but it has that authentic Verona vibe, like it’s been whispering secrets since Romeo and Juliet’s days. Check-in was a breeze; the owner greeted me personally with a glass of chilled Prosecco (a nice touch after lugging my suitcase over the uneven cobblestones), and she even shared a tip about avoiding the crowds at the nearby Arena di Verona by catching an early morning walk. Parking’s a bit of a hassle here – I mean, it’s the pedestrian zone, so you’ll want to arrange a spot at one of the garages on Via Cappello if you’re driving, but once you’re settled, you forget all about it.

What really sets this place apart, though, is how it blends that boutique intimacy with genuine luxury without feeling stuffy. My room – one of the suites on the upper floor – had these high frescoed ceilings and velvet armchairs that made me feel like I was crashing in some noble’s spare bedroom. The bed was ridiculously comfortable, with those crisp Egyptian cotton sheets that smell faintly of lavender (they must use some local essential oils or something), and the bathroom? Marble everything, rain shower, and even heated floors for those cooler Verona evenings. It’s not huge, mind you – sort of cozy in that European way – but there’s a little balcony overlooking the courtyard where I sipped coffee each morning, listening to the distant church bells from Santa Anastasia just a block away. Breakfast is served in this sunlit atrium downstairs, with fresh pastries from a bakery on Via Mazzini (try the sfogliatelle if they’re available), and it’s included, which is a godsend in a city where cafes can nickel-and-dime you. Oh, and a minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the older wings during peak hours, but hey, who comes to Verona to scroll Instagram all day? The staff sorted it out quickly anyway, and they threw in recommendations for hidden spots like the Giardino Giusti gardens, which are a short stroll across the Adige River – perfect for escaping the midday heat.

All in all, if you’re the type who wants to feel immersed in Verona’s soul without sacrificing comfort, Palazzo Monga is a gem. It’s got that 9.7 rating for a reason – four stars that punch above their weight, especially in the quieter off-season when the streets empty out after 10 PM and you can hear the faint hum of the city winding down. I’ve stayed in fancier spots, but this one left me with stories: like that evening I wandered back from Juliet’s balcony (it’s literally a five-minute walk) and collapsed into the plush lounge with a book. You’d be hard-pressed to find better value in the historical center – book it if you can, and thank me later. (Word count: 428)

  • Michael from United States – 22 October 2024 (10/10)

Palazzo Monga is a wonderful stay experience! The suites are very well appointed with little touches that make it a remarkable travel experience that doesn't feel like just another high end hotel. Located in the heart of Verona, it is close to everything. The staff is exceptionally friendly, helpful and accommodating.

What could be improved: Nothing to note except that when arriving by car be sure to call them for exact instructions on how to get there. Verona's narrow, pedestrian filled streets can make navigating there a bit daunting.

  • David from United Kingdom – 27 September 2024 (10/10)

Luxury, very small (3 suites and one room), up-market boutique hotel – very spacious room – high ceilings – extremely well appointed – great location.
Decent gym and sauna (which we didn't use).
Although expensive, objectively, it is great value for money on a per sq ft basis.
Very friendly, helpful and courteous manager.

What could be improved: The only room service is for breakfast (which was very nice). We knew this so not a problem. But if you want the full-service level that you get from a high-end hotel (i.e. 24hr room service) you will be disappointed.
Reception desk only attended part-time (but very responsive to WhatsApp etc).
