Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to Tenuta EnGi after a bit of a drive from Verona’s centro storico – you know, weaving out past the Adige River and those winding roads that take you into the hills around Buttapietra. It’s tucked away on Via Centurara, which honestly feels more like a country lane than a proper street, with olive groves and vineyards stretching out on either side. I mean, if you’re coming from the A4 autostrada, it’s a breeze – maybe 20 minutes from the Verona Sud exit – but watch for those narrow turns; my rental car got a little scratched from the hedges. Anyway, the place itself? It’s this charming old estate turned boutique hotel, all stone walls and terracotta roofs that scream “authentic Veneto” without trying too hard. Check-in was a breeze – the owner, this warm guy named Enrico (or was it Giovanni? Something like that), greeted us with a glass of local Amarone right off the bat. No stuffy front desk vibe; it felt like arriving at a friend’s villa.
What really hooked me was how peaceful it is out there, especially after the chaos of Verona’s summer crowds at the Arena or Juliet’s balcony. The rooms – we had one on the ground floor with a little patio overlooking the gardens – are spacious and comfy, with those high wooden beams and crisp linens that smell faintly of lavender (they must use some local soap or something). Honestly, the bed was a dream after a day of exploring; no street noise at all, just crickets and the occasional owl at night. Breakfast is a highlight – fresh croissants, homemade jams from their own fruits, and eggs however you want ’em, served in this sunny courtyard where bees buzz around the rosemary bushes. We even borrowed bikes from the hotel to pedal down to nearby San Giovanni Lupatoto for a quick market run – it’s only about 5km, and you pass these tiny family-run wineries along the way. Oh, and parking? Plenty of free spots right on site, which is a godsend in Italy where that’s never a given. That said, if you’re here in peak July, book ahead because it fills up with wine tourists hitting the Valpolicella routes – we lucked out in shoulder season, when it’s quieter and you can actually hear yourself think.
Look, if you’re the type who wants to escape the tourist grind but still dip into Verona for a day trip (it’s like 15km to the city gates), Tenuta EnGi is spot on. It’s not flawless – the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the farther rooms, and there’s no full restaurant on site, so you’ll drive for dinner (try that trattoria in Zevio, about 10 minutes away, for killer risotto). But overall, with that 9.3 rating, it’s earned – we left feeling recharged, like we’d stumbled on a slice of real Italian countryside life. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially for a romantic getaway or even with kids who can run around the grounds. Just pack bug spray for those evening walks; the mosquitoes here are no joke.

The rooms are big and cold in the summer so is great to hide from the heat. The swimming pool is amazing for kids, loads of toys and a slide! Easy to find location, parking spaces available. Comfortable check in.
Great to be in the Italian countryside.
Would love to stay longer next time.
What could be improved: The walls are thin so if you have neighbours that don't know how to be quiet, it can be a problem.Nina from Italy – 22 August 2024 (10/10)
