Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to Calla, Calluna & Gardenia Apartments on Viale della Repubblica in Borgo Trento – you know, that leafy neighborhood just across the Adige River from Verona’s old center. It’s not smack in the middle of the tourist chaos around Piazza delle Erbe, which honestly was a relief after dodging crowds all day. I mean, we arrived in the late afternoon during opera season last summer, when the city’s buzzing with festival-goers, and finding this spot felt like stumbling into a quiet corner of real Verona life. The building itself has this understated charm – three separate apartments named after flowers, which sort of fits the vibe, all fresh and welcoming with big windows letting in that golden Italian sunlight. Check-in was a breeze; the owner met us right at the door with keys and a quick rundown in broken English mixed with Italian gestures – no fancy lobby, just a personal touch that made it feel like crashing at a friend’s place. Oh, and parking? We lucked out with a spot on the street nearby, but heads up, it’s permit-only in parts of Borgo Trento, so ask ahead if you’re driving – saved us from circling for ages like we did downtown.
What really won me over were the little details that make staying here feel authentic, not some cookie-cutter hotel setup. Our apartment (we got Gardenia, the one with the balcony overlooking a tiny courtyard) had this cozy kitchenette stocked with basics – fresh coffee grounds and even a bottle of local Valpolicella waiting in the fridge, which we cracked open while planning our walks. It’s all modern but with those old Verona touches, like exposed brick walls that smell faintly of aged stone, and beds so comfy you sink right in after trekking across Ponte Pietra to the Arena. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly peaceful for being so close to the action; you might hear the occasional scooter zipping down Via Mameli nearby, but nothing that kept us up – well, except maybe the church bells from San Giorgio in Braida on Sunday mornings, which added to the charm, I suppose. We wandered to that little bakery on Via IV Novembre for morning croissants, just a five-minute stroll, and it beat any hotel breakfast buffet. That said, if you’re not into self-catering, there’s no on-site restaurant – a minor downside, but honestly, with all the trattorias in Borgo Trento, like that hidden gem Trattoria al Pompiere a short walk away, you won’t miss it. And in quieter off-seasons, like early spring, the place feels even more like your own Verona hideaway, with fewer people around and that crisp air carrying hints of blooming gardens.
Look, if you’re after a spot that lets you live like a local without skimping on comfort – especially for a family or a longer stay – this is it. The 4-star rating and that solid 9.2 score? Totally earned, from the spotless linens to the thoughtful extras like free Wi-Fi that actually works for streaming those Italian cooking shows. We ended up extending our trip just to linger, sipping espresso on the balcony and watching the neighborhood wake up. You won’t get the glitz of those big chains near the station, but you’ll get a genuine taste of Verona’s soul – and isn’t that what traveling’s all about?

Our stay in Verona was fantastic! The host was extremely friendly and always available to provide all the information we needed, making everything smooth and easy. The location of the apartment is perfect – close to the city’s main attractions but still in a quiet area. The apartment itself is beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, and fully equipped for a comfortable stay. We highly recommend it and would definitely return!
