Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to Hotel Leon d’Oro on Viale Piave after a quick train ride into Verona’s Porta Nuova station – it’s honestly just a 10-minute walk if you’re not lugging too much baggage, which saved me a taxi fare. The street’s got that typical Veronese buzz, you know, with scooters zipping by and locals grabbing espresso at the corner cafés, but it’s not right in the chaotic heart of the old town. I mean, it’s close enough – you can stroll to the Arena in about 20 minutes, dodging the tourist crowds on Via Mazzini – but far enough that you don’t hear the opera echoes all night. Checking in was a breeze; the front desk folks were chatty in that warm Italian way, sorting my room key with a side of advice on where to grab real gelato nearby (spoiler: avoid the traps near the river and head to Ponte Pietra instead). The lobby’s got this classic feel – marble floors that click under your shoes, a faint scent of fresh lilies from the vase by the elevators, and honestly, it’s bigger than you’d expect for a 4-star spot, with plenty of seating if you’re waiting for a friend.
What really stuck with me were the rooms – mine was on the third floor, overlooking the avenue, and while the decor’s a bit old-school (think heavy drapes and wooden furniture that could use a refresh), it was spotless and comfy. The bed? Firm but not rock-hard, with sheets that smelled like they’d just come off the line – a nice touch after a day wandering Verona’s cobblestone streets. Breakfast is included, and oh man, it’s a spread: fresh cornetti still warm from the oven, cappuccinos made right there (none of that weak machine stuff), and even some local cheeses if you’re feeling adventurous. I appreciated the free Wi-Fi that actually worked without dropping every five minutes, and there’s underground parking if you’re driving – a godsend in a city where spots are gold during Vinitaly season in spring, when the fairgrounds down the road pack out. That said, if your room faces the street, you might hear some traffic hum in the mornings – nothing earplugs can’t fix, but it’s worth asking for a quieter courtyard view. The staff? Super helpful; one guy even sketched a quick map to the best osteria on Borgo Venezia for aperitivo.
All in all, if you’re hitting Verona for a mix of romance and history – like catching a show at the Arena or just meandering to Juliet’s balcony – this place is a solid pick without breaking the bank. It’s not flashy or over-the-top luxurious, but that’s kind of the charm; it feels authentic, like staying with a well-traveled uncle who knows the city inside out. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when it’s quieter and you can snag a deal – just pack light and embrace the walk to the center. You won’t regret it.

The hotel is great! Very comfortable, nice breakfast, with private parking (payed) which was perfect to leave the car there and go out the next full day and pick it up in the afternoon.
Also, when there is traffic, there is a street just outside of the hotel, that brings you to a street without much traffic.
There is also a close supermarket.

Near to bus/train station
What could be improved: Could do with better signage en route for walkers from station. Ditch the coffee machines and provide flasks of coffee.Arben from Albania – 23 September 2024 (9/10)
The hotel was excellent, but they did not adhere to the conditions of our Booking.com reservation.
What could be improved: We had reserved a room for two people with separate beds, but we were placed in a room with a double bed instead. We booked through Booking.com and paid all the necessary taxes, yet we were unexpectedly charged an additional 15 euros per person for taxes. We’re confused about why the room was changed and why we incurred extra charges!
